Cajun Bats Swing Away In 17-4 Win at New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun baseball team defeats the New Orleans Privateers by a score of 17-4 here at Maestri Field in the first of a three game Sun Belt series. Louisiana (18-25) wins their third straight game and improves to 9-7 in conference play, while New Orleans (20-22) falls to 4-9 in the conference.

The Ragin’ Cajuns offense scored a season high 17 runs to go with a season high 23 hits. The 23 hits is second all-time only to a record 26 hits set in 1997 against Louisiana Tech.

Louisiana went with sophomore right-hander Kevin Ardoin against New Orleans right-hander Michael Jones. Ardoin picked up the win after holding the Privateers to just three runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

  2. Default Ragin' Cajuns Destroy Privateers

NEW ORLEANS — It’s not often that Louisiana’s baseball team has posted a runaway win at Privateer Park.

But an eight-run inning can turn even a close contest into a laugher.

Of course, the Ragin’ Cajuns may not have needed it the way Kevin Ardoin was pitching, but the eight-spot in the seventh inning put any doubt about the outcome of their Sun Belt Conference series opener against New Orleans to rest.

The Cajuns scored in six straight innings, exploded for a season-high 23 hits and made a statement with a 17-4 win over the Privateers here Friday night.

“I’ve been on the other end of one like this,’’ said Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux. “Sometimes the ball bounces that way. We were fortunate to get those bounces tonight, but we know that we’ve got to start over again tomorrow.’’

Louisiana (18-25, 9-7 Sun Belt) collected its season high for runs and hits, and had its biggest individual inning in four seasons with the eight-run seventh that added to a lead that was already 6-2.

  6. Default Cajuns Hold On For Series Sweep of UNO, Extend Win Streak to Five Games

NEW ORLEANS - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun baseball team defeats the New Orleans Privateers by a score of 4-3 here at Maestri Field to complete the three game conference sweep. It was the first time ever that the Cajuns have swept the Privateers on the road.

Louisiana (20-25) wins their fifth straight game and improves to 11-7 in conference play, while New Orleans (20-24) falls to 4-11 in the conference.

Louisiana went with junior left-hander Austin Faught against New Orleans right-hander J.P. Martinez.

Faught (4-3) pitched six strong innings, allowing just three hits and two runs to pick up his second straight Sun Belt conference win. He struck out seven Privateer batters and walked just one.

In Faught’s last two starts he has given up just seven hits in 15 innings pitched.

The Cajuns scored first for the third straight game against the Privateers with four runs in the first four innings to take a 4-0 lead.

  7. Default Cajuns make Privateers walk the plank

NEW ORLEANS — After two days of offensive domination, Louisiana’s pitchers apparently decided it was their turn here Sunday.

Starter Austin Faught and reliever Kraig Schambough didn’t get the hitting support that their mound mates got on Friday and Saturday, but they got enough to make a little history with the Cajuns’ first-ever sweep of New Orleans at Privateer Park.

Faught and Schambough made four early runs stand up in a 4-3 decision that completed the perfect three-game Sun Belt Conference weekend.

“It’s tough to sweep anywhere in anybody’s park, much less this one,’’ Cajun coach Tony Robichaux said. “We’re fortunate that we were able to put three back-to-back games together, and that’s what we have to do this time of year.”

The Cajuns (20-25, 11-7 Sun Belt) had won in 17-4 and 18-7 laughers on Friday and Saturday, and looked to be on the way to another run-loaded win after bolting out to a 4-0 lead after four innings.
