It says "Part of the credit for the turnaround can be attributed to the difficult non-conference schedule." does a loss on a tough non-conference schedule help or hurt a teams rpi?

I was referring to the difficult non-conference schedule preparing the Cajuns for the conference season. I think that the tough schedule helped further the development of some of the younger players. It also provided much in the way of mental toughness. I think this team will continue to improve because of it.
As far as a loss helping or hurting your RPI, it depends on the RPI of an opponent and your own RPI. But in general, it helps to play higher RPI opponents, even if you have a losing record against those opponents (as opposed to sweeping a patsy). Going 0-3 (i.e. Astros College Classic) hurts. Whether going 0-3 against a high RPI opponent(s) brings your RPI up or down depends on where you are in the RPI ratings.
