Clever to do what? I think you need to be more clear. Desormeaux went down in the middle of the field and there was no advantage gained to him being injured there. If you're talking about late in the game, its not hard to understand that you don't need the points and just go down on one knee. It's pretty simple and you don't need to be "clever" to figure it out.
