Thread: UL vs Southeastern Louisiana

Brian seems to me the strength of schedule and RPI are different sides of the same coin. In the examples you cited, Cal-Irvine and San Diego had strong SOS and high RPI. Isn't it unusual that UL would have a top 12 RPI and such a low SOS? An example was made in another post that the NY Yankees could play a weaker schedule and win 85% of their games and still have a low RPI even though they were clearly the best team. It seems a lot of consideration should go to how well you have played.

Yes, of course it is two sides of the same coin. If you recall recently, I have mentioned that while the selection committee is being redundant when citing a team's RPI *and* it's strength of schedule as the reason for a seeding/placement, they still think in these terms. So yes ... they are placing additional emphasis on SOS when they do this ... whether they realize it or not.

It just seems that they contradict each other.

Win all your games and strength of schedule goes down.

Lose all your games and strength of schedule goes up.

The same events have the opposite effect on RPI.

    That is my understanding.

RPI takes into consideration strength of schedule. In order for us to have such a high RPI we had to play out of our minds. Taking SOS into consideration in addition to RPI is further stacking the deck in favor of the big conferences.

    Absurdity to prove a point;

Lets say a college team (goes undefeated) plays and beats every team in the MLB for the first half of their season.

#1 RPI in the country! #1 Strength of schedule.

Second half of their season they play and beat the same number of High School teams.

Final result slightly above average RPI, and a very middle of the road SOS.

Neither stick measured how good they really were.

No, winning all of your games does not affect your OWP and it has a positive effect on your OOWP. Thus, winning more actually helps your SOS.

Brian…. What exactly is the formula for SOS? I am starting to comprehend how RPI works (finally after many tutorials from you) but still don't know what all goes in to SOS. Also, why does it vary so greatly between Warren Nolan and Boyd's world?

Each has a different formula. If you go to Boyd's World, he's done a lot of work on the site and you can now go to each team's page. On there you can see his SOS formula:

    Strength of Schedule = OWP / 2 + OOWP / 4

    http://www.boydsworld.com/sa/louisiana-lafayette.html

Warren Nolan's looks to be closer to the OWP but not exactly the same. I can't find their formula.

So we are actually contributing 1840 wins into our own OOWP? Cool. I bet nobody else can say that.
