i was waiting for someone to bring up socal's so-called "soft schedule." just a point in fact: usc is the only bcs team in the nation that plays another bcs school every game this season. to write them out of the bcs picture this early may be premature. now, if they were to lose another game, well then. because we all know there is no way the wonderful, and perfect bcs system and its administrators would ever choose a 2 loss team to play for its campionship. now would they? hmmm.
Everyone that says USC has a soft schedule are just sheep blindly following the flock. Chances are they haven't bothered to actually check out the facts. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't care for USC, but they don't shy away from playing anyone.
This year, their non-conference games are at Virginia, Ohio State and at Notre Dame. Last year, they played at Nebraska and Notre Dame. In 2006, they played at Arkansas, and at home against Nebraska and Notre Dame. In 2004, they played at Virginia Tech and BYU. In 2003, they played at Auburn.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if USC won the rest of their games and ended up in the national title game at the end of the year. People act like losing a Pac-10 game on the road is a joke. Oregon State went 9-4 last year with a bowl win, a lot of teams would love to be that "bad."
Very true, BUT that was last year. Virginia is bad, Oregon St. got beat by Stanford. I'm not knocking the past years of pac 10 even though they've been very top heavy the past 3-4 years. And no USC does not shy away from competition but that can be a double edged sword at the same time. You get your team jacked up to play Arkansas, Nebraska, and Auburn then ask them to get just as excited for Stanford, who they play every year. Bottom line USC lost to a very sub-par team last night. If you want to be rewarded with the National Championship you have to show up every week, whether your playing Nebraska or Turnpike Tech. If your the best team in the nation like USC is said to be, you don't lose to OSU.
No doubt about it, but in college football can you truly say that every year? Last year, did LSU deserve to play for the national title? I mean, after all, they did lose to Kentucky and Arkansas. I mean, shouldn't LSU be able to beat those teams if they want to compete for a national title?
I guess my point is that in college football, there's no such thing as an easy win anymore. Every loss is a bad one because for every team, it's not what they expected. If USC wins the rest of their games by an average of 25-30 points and they're the only team left with one loss, can you really penalize them for having one bad game?
I think it's alot tougher to go undefeated in college football than people realize. This is not 1980 anymore, every team has 85 scholarship players, every school has decent facilities and pro players they can hang their hats on. It's so damn cliche, but Any Given Saturday (Thursday/Friday/Monday/Tuesday) anything can happen. I have a hard time casting a team aside (any team) after one bad loss. It's the same thing as people giving up on the Cajuns after a horrible start to the season.
I agree with you completely! 100% that's what makes college football so awesome! It's almost a one and done season. My whole point of the thread was to let out frustration of always hearing about USC from media outlets. It was getting so saturated for the past two weeks. Espn basically had a USC as a category on there bottomline ticker. They seem to always give USC a lot of credit before it is deserved. Case in point the National Championship talk in week 3. And I know I may notice it more because I hate USC but my friends notice it as well so i know it's not just me.
