
Uber recently began adding a $1 “Safe Rides Fee” for UberX ridesharing trips on its platform. Users have been receiving the following message in the app: While the nature of the fee remains disconcertingly vague, the money appears to be going toward insurance costs for UberX drivers, which operate in some markets with a personal license and insurance, unlike UberTaxi and Uber Black services, which require commercial licenses.
