I think the meaning is more than clear. The NEWS article is suppose to answer questions the average person may not know a lot about the who, what, and where. This comment about the conference was just to let the reader know that the SBC is the conference we belong to, or a member of, not that UL belongs in the SBC.

I generally do not like this writer, but I see nothing in this getting all upset about.

They need to realize that it's for the greater good. If Hud continues the ascension of the football program, money pours into the university. It's like the Tiger Woods effect on the PGA tour. He was making a bazillion dollars, but the sports popularity and growth made everyone else a ton of money too.
