Aaron Fitt: I don't see a ton of major league-caliber talents in the (Louisiana) lineup, the way Virginia has, so I think a truly elite pitching staff could shut down the Cajuns (good pitching does have a way of beating good hitting anyway, as we all know).

We'll see about that. We have several players nobody will be surprised to see play on TV some time down the road.

D (Mobile): I have a UL-Lafayette question for you. Is there precedent of a team being given a national seed without even playing another team that is in contention for a national seed?

Aaron Fitt: Well, the Cajuns did play a three-game series against Alabama -- the team that currently sits all alone in first place in the SEC. And the Cajuns won that series. There is precedent for other mid-major teams getting national seeds with RPIs in the 11-20 range, even with lesser strength of schedules. UC Irvine in 2009 comes to mind.

... and this will be the interesting thing to watch with this selection committee. 2009 was the last season where something like this happened. In the last four seasons, the selection committee has focused much more on the top RPIs when handing out national seeds. The following RPIs at selection time earned national seeds ...

2013 -> 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 (#9 was the Pac-12 2nd place team - Oregon ... #7 NC State finished 4th in the ACC)
2012 -> 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11 (#11 South Carolina finished 2nd in the #2 RPI conference ... #8 Purdue finished 1st in the #10 RPI Conference)
2011 -> 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 (#11 Rice finished 1st in the #5 RPI Conference, #12 Texas tied for 1st in the #3 RPI Conference ... ACC already had three national seeds ... #7 Clemson finished 6th in the #2 RPI Conference, #8 Georgia Tech tied for 1st in the #2 RPI Conference)
2010 -> 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 (#10 Georgia Tech finished 2nd in the #3 RPI Conference ... #8 Miami finished 3rd in the #3 RPI Conference)

Compare the above prior four seasons to the below ...

2009 -> 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 17, 18 (#4 Georgia Tech and #6 Virginia ... from the #2 RPI Conference ... were not awarded national seeds).

There were many more years prior to 2009 that were just like 2009. The shift took place with the 2010 season.

I do think that if the softball and baseball seasons ended today, there is no doubt that both Cajun squads would be national seeds. Could you imagine four consecutive weekends of NCAA postseason play at the Cajun sports complex?
