Here is another insider example from UL Today of how rediculous our name issue has become. "aka" is used to identify other names for our university that includes UL L, which I thought the university did NOT want to use. That we have to refer to ouselves using an "aka" is in itself a sad commentary on this. CajunFun has addressed our Logo Crisis and our Mascot Crisis, but to my knowledge is yet to address our Name Crisis. I would like to see his opinion on this rediculous situation.

Every time that happens, I leave empty handed. I think the only things I've purchased in the last ~3 years were a $20 long sleeve T-shirt while tailgating because the temps were lower than I anticipated while preparing for the trip to town, and about 3 months ago, a $30 trailer hitch cover that was red with silver letters. Since installation of the hitch cover, the red outside has fallen off, and the letters cannot be deciphered from a distance greater than 3".

Not buying what is not appealing doesn't tell the vendors that Cajun fans don't like the crap they're making...it tells them that Cajun fans aren't out there. If there was a good selection to choose from, and a company put something out that was crap, which didn't sell, then they would know that the item was unpopular because that item's sales were far below everything else. However, almost all of it is crap because of a pepper that nobody's fond of, or because it's yellow or orange, or because of the Lafayette label, or just because of the quality in general. So, when they put out some new crap, and its crappy sales are on par with the crappy sales of all the other crap, the vendors don't know that we think its crap...they just think that we don't exist because none of it sells.

As far as pursuing the issue...even though many fan's have brought it up to various members of the administration, it's not their job to do so. This logo/licensing thing is only one of many issues at UL, with similar characteristics. The problem is that there are too many UL employees who have jobs and don't have careers. Until that changes, the school will not reach its full potential. _

Maybe you just need to try harder. The UL bookstore has some really nice stuff at the booths they set up at our football games.

Also, talk to Rob Harris for one about some quality merchandise. He'll make it for you and he donates a portion of what you spend to UL athletics. I haven't seen him post lately but he uses "FeteAmour" for a handle when he does.

He did some of the murals at Cajun Field

What UL needs is a full time merchandise store at the athletic complex, sort of a University Coop store open 7 days a week to sell nothing but UL merchandise. And, I'm not talking about that little shop in the baseball stadium. I'm talking about a nice retail center where you can get just about whatever gear you want to buy. The bookstore is not easy to get, parking is terrible, it isn't open on Saturdays and for game days, all you have is a couple of booths. It is time for UL to step up with something more quality than we have. And yes, I have mentioned it to Farmer. I think he likes the idea. I threw out the UT Coop store in Houston would be a good model to use and he said don't expect us to be able to copy anything UT does because we don't have those kind of funds. Maybe not, but we should be able to do something on a smaller scale. We have almost nothing now and lose out on a lot of easy revenue, not to mention the lost marketing from people NOT wearing UL gear (without Lafayette).

Per Scott Farmer, that suggestion is in the works. At Oregon theirs is in the IPF next to the stadium.

It should be obvious to everyone that the admin. is simply scared to rock the boat with the name issue. They probably think that one of our very own would be the first one to report us to the State if we did try something. You know.....what's her name, that freakin' @#%*@!.

People tend to recognize "Ragin Cajuns", but have no effing clue just who in the heck these Ragin Cajuns are.

We confuse the issue beyond recognition with our silly name games.

We want to be known as UL or Louisiana. Right?....and we want to do it in a way that doesn't break the law or irritate our very own Gladys Kravitz.

Our approach has to be uniform, pardon the pun, meaning every sport uses the same logo as their main calling card, and it can't be "Ragin Cajuns".

The obvious answer is the interlocking UL on the baseball caps. It should also be on the helmets. We can do this and hide the city tag so that Gladys is happy and nobody sees it from the stands. They should see a big, fat UL on the helmets and the ball caps.

It is my understanding that we can also use just the word LOUISIANA as well. This should be placed in bigger letters on the front of the football jersey and on most baseball and basketball uniform jerseys.

    You gettin' the picture?

We market ourselves completely bass ackwards. Ragin Cajuns is great, but it needs to take a backseat now as our name crisis needs to be resolved.

Bottom line is we can't have it both ways. We can't continue to plaster Ragin Cajuns and the flaming vegetable on every GD thing we sell and think it furthers our identity. It does not.

If we want to be known as UL or LOUISIANA, then that is what we have to plaster on everything, and there is a perfectly legal way to do it.

Take a deep breath CN. You obviously don't know "Gladys". Doing away with the "Lafayette" would make no one and I will repeat no one more happier than our own "Gladys". Even more than you, I or Houston Cajun. And yes she despises it's use. She's been fighting this fight for a very long time. Somebody has to do the administrations dirty work.

If you would like to meet with her, let me know once the season starts. I'm sure I can arrange something. Nothing like a couple of Vermilion Parish folks meeting over a couple of cold ones to have a friendly discussion.

Oh BTW, practice starts Wednesday. Rock on my brother.

I can only go by my experiences with her, and what I read on this board.

    It hasn't been flattering.

E-mail Doc Savoie and send the picture. He was the guy who declared last year that we are Louisiana. If he really feels that way then he would be able to put a stop to this kind of merchandise.
