Thread: UL's Logo Crisis

  1. Default Re: UL's Logo Crisis

Since we seem to live in a graphical world.

Here, (LINK) Julie Simon-Dronet makes a disconnected leap in that she asks "Have you heard of the Ragin' Cajuns?" the leap is in trying to connect "heard of" with 'visually recognizable' logo.

I just feel that hearing of something and really knowing what it actually is and/or who it is connected with are 2 different things.

This UL Logo article is excellent and needs to be more publicized.

I sent an email right after the Julie Dronet article to Julie and Dr. S about the disconnect between Ragin Cajuns and UL, about the lack of a clearly identifiable logo, about eliminating the inclusion of Lafayette with the University of Louisiana for athletics and in having to ability to purchase university approved gear and merchandise without Lafayette, about the need to build a facility at the athletic complex that sells UL gear & merchandise 7 days a week, every week of the year because of the inaccessability of the UL Bookstore and the remoteness of the athletic complex from the main campus, about the amount of money that could be generated from marketing UL gear without the Lafayette and from sales at this building, and about how athletics is UL's window to the world and that we need to effectively market it and put out a good product, especially in football which we again failed to do, in order to galvanize the community and bring recognition to the university. Neither has responded to date.

    DROP THE PEPPER LOGO
DROP THE HOT WHEELS CIRCLE LOGO
KEEP THE FLEUR DE LIS LOGO
    KEEP THE UL LOGO
KEEP THE LOUISIANA'S over RAGIN CAJUNS LOGO (like on the batting cage fences at the tigue)

    DONE DEAL
YELLOW IS NOT AND HAS NEVER BEEN A SCHOOL COLOR!!!

Why not borrow elements of the flag of Acadiana?

The three fleur-de-lis portion shown below would be simple, elegant, and distinct from the Saints logo:

That flag used to be on a USL football helmet, a white helmet with the flag on it, back in the late 60s or early 70s.

"Although I love the Bull Gator, we are only exchanging one disconnect for another. "

The pepper is a disconnect the fleur-de-lis and the Bull Gator are not. The fleur-de-lis has been used to the point of saturation by every school in Louisiana so it is out in every form except offical seals. The Bull Gator is more Louisiana than about anything on the planet and as far as I know is only used at one other school and they don't have live Bull Gators outside their student union. PS I love the Bull Gator too.

Several months ago on a different thread where we were discussing mascots, someone posted a red Bullgator character with UL on it and named it "Fideaux". I thought that was pretty clever. The mascot looked great and a uniformed mascot could easily be designed. We could build a sanctuary outside Cajun Field where fans could visit. We could name Fideaux. Or, we could call it Louie. Or, we could have 2 Bullgators, a male and a female and name them Louie and Ana, which would fall right into our Louisiana name. We have a swamp on campus with Bullgators in it, we have a football field called The Swamp which fits the theme and we have a Gator Cove for the Soccer and Track & Field complex.

Would whoever posted the Bullgator character please repost it on this thread?

I believe the Fleur de Lis is already a part of the university seal and official university markings. Since the athletic department is using Louisiana more and more on the field turf, uniforms and media releases, it is time to remove the " 's " and use just Louisiana Ragin Cajuns for athletics. Academically, the university can use its official name as other universities do. _
I have to agree with you that the "s" at the end of Louisiana must go. I don't even understand why it was ever used to begin with.

I have to disagree with you on your mascot idea. I would love both the pelican and the bullgator but they are both already used by in state schools. Tulane is using the Pelican as their mascot while UNO uses a gator on theirs (I think). I read that someone else said use a crawfish but that seems kind of childish and silly. Just as silly as a pepper. However, if we do use the Bullgator idea, I think Fideaux is a terible name. It sounds like a name for a dog. We can be more creative than that.

Just my two cents, but it seems like the whole mascot change idea is never going to happen. Julie Dronet, aka The Logo Police, seems like she is in love with the pepper idea. Doesn't seem like changes are coming with the logo/mascot until there is a change in her job.

Only at the start of football season would a Ragin Cajun board be discussing mascots. We could have tinkerbell as our mascot if we win I'm happy.

Anything to avoid talking about the issues at hand. See also: making fun of other in-state schools to cover our own flaws.
