The good part is that it is not all the way around like we did last weekend, its only equal to approx 1/4 of the area. It's do-able. Now the ring around the bottom has been painted (off white) several times before, so the concrete was fairly sealed. The other two areas have never been painted so that concrete may really soak up some paint. It may need some kind of primer first. Anybody have a lot of concrete painting experience?? :o
You would definitely need a special primer first.

Also, the method of "reaching over the side" would get the nix from the admin because of safety issues. It's also a good way to drip a ton of paint on the seats below.

Looks sharp, wish I could attend in person. How about a water line to show where sea level is? A two inch white line up two feet from the field all the way around is bound to be a conversation starter.

Since this area has never been painted the concrete would have to be pressure washed and probably brush blasted. An Epoxy primer would be used with an elastomeric top coat. All coatings would have to be applied in desending surface temperatures to avoid outgasing resulting in blistering. A UV Inhibiting final coat should be used to prevent fading to pink. This would have to ba a job by professionals with proper saftey gear. This is not a weekend project

I have been involved in painting water towers and concrete structures for many years. Guilbeau Road water tower will change color this fall. (It will be white).

A good painting crew would put drop cloths on the lower deck seating.

Anyone in favor of letting this guy be the leader of a crew of volunteers, I think we've found the expert we were looking for, what can you tell us about cleaning up stadium concrete. Like, what would we need to do it, and what we would have to do to keep it that way. I think all stadium cleaning questions should be run by this guy.

RedBug, you could run the paint and supplies up the stadium with your "FOUR WHEELER"!! NO I am like you I feel it is doable, the key though would be to use this special paint I was told comes out of Tennessesse! It is what was used to paint where Jake, Brian, Brandon, etc names and numbers are on the student side. It does not fade to pink nearly as quickly as the cheaper brands.

Is this the begining of a BIG paint Party?????

"what can you tell us about cleaning up stadium concrete."

Plenty of work and plenty of money

'Like, what would we need to do it, and what we would have to do to keep it that way.'"

Plenty of money then Plenty of work and oh yeah More money. On a continuous basis.

The major problem with the stadium is not cosmetic it is structural. Rebar was not placed properly and as a result it is too close to the exterior face of the concrete. In many places it has started to rust causing the thin layer of concrete over it to spall. This will develope into a major problem if it is not addressed soon. Once the rebar problem is solved, then the cosmetic problem can be addressed. In most cases the rebar problem can be fixed by proper surface preparation for a coating application. The thinking is that an old lady should not spend alot of time and money on makeup because more makeup will not solve the problem. A facelift is more in order.

For now I would think that the best thing to do is to fill the stadium with people so that you don't see the stadium. While I see what you are talking about the concrete looks as it should and is perfectly natural for exposed concrete in this part of the country. I do not see it as anything out of the ordinary.

You might want to check out the elevated water tanks in Southpark or Northpark. The pedestal that the metal tank sets on is concrete and it looks very good. However, it is a specific mix design to be very dense and as a result moisture resistant.

LUS has already planned to put LUS in big letters on the water tower. My opinion of that is that it will look terrible. Any kind of printing on a toriodal tank has to be distorted because ther is no flat or cylindrical surface on any part of the tank. The lettering will be thinner at the bottom and wider at the top causing a very distorted image. Also most of the image will be pointing up. A great view for passing planes and copters. My estimate to put LUS in big letters at two locations on the tank is $15,000.00 to $20,000.00. A waste of money so far as I'm concerned.

We were talking about getting the tunnel fixed up---HOw about a lil sign --"Welcome to the Louisiana Swamp, 2 feet below sea level" Maybe the Original swamp would be better!!!!

    Helmut:

Have you ever taken a look at Rice Stadium in Houston?

The place is much older but the concrete appears to be in much better shape. I was looking but didn't really see any spalling.
