Thread: Cajun Field 1971...

Halloween is an appropriate day for us to talk about expanding the football stadium. The most popular costume at most Cajun football games is people dressed as empty seats.

Perhaps we should worry about getting a good football team that plays every game in every season at a consistent level. Perhaps before we sink $60 million we should ask our football program to defeat at least one SEC team.

I would think that fixing up what we already have with very nice very comfortable seats for every one would be a priority. Then put a product on the field that would make it difficulty buy a ticket for one of those seats. Sometimes "less is more".

Baseball deserves a stadium that is as nice as any stadium in American because we have program and a coach that can stand with any program in America. We gave Softball the stadium they earned. We built the Cajun Dome (aka the sterile dome) and now we proudly put 3000 butts in the seats at our basketball games. How many times have you heard "let's move back to Blackham b cause the smaller crowds make more noise there?

We don't need a bigger football stadium. Perhaps we need a few grand suites for big donors but the current stadium with a face lift is fine the way it currently stands.

Everyone is concentrating on the more seats theme but I've never been given the impression that is even close to being a primary concern.

First off you can't put nicer seats in with the current layout. Spacing isn't right to allow that happen. Primary reasons for expansion are: Modern press box which is desperately needed and it also changes the perception for other schools and conferences when it comes to realignment. Suites produce revenue as do those club level seats. We also need additional office space. If you are going to do all of the above it would make sense to take advantage of economies of scale and add just a little more seating but that isn't what is driving this train.

Cajun 90, obviously you know more than I do. Why can't we put in nice chair backs for the entire stadium? Why do we need a nicer press box? I have been in both the athletic director and president's suite for games and they are very nice.

Maybe we could build suites for donors over the student side. Maybe the donor could build in their own suite with a 5-10 year lease and minimum donation?

I still don't think we need anything until they show us improvement. What comes first, the top 25 team or the top 25 facilities? I think we have seen negative results with our athletes this season being given the new athletic center that some of them do not deserve. If I was the coach and players were late to team meetings because they were playing video games I would be ____ed.

I would also be ____ed if I was a 4.0 GPA pre-med student who isn't allowed access to the facilities built for 2.0 GPA athletes, but that's a different topic for a different thread.

Yeah, I'd really like to see the matching upper decks and bowl in the scoreboard side of the endzone. That would give us a real big time facility.

If we wait until the football team is "better" then we will end up just like The Tigue. The Tigue should have been remodeled years ago and the team would be showcasing a new park while hosting a regional. Cajun Field is 40+ years old and bigger seats will not work with new building codes/standards.

This is of course the correct viewpoint.

Same with conference affiliations, you don't wait till you "earn" it on the field before making your move.

Until we can consistently SELL OUT Cajun Field, we shouldn't even be sniffing the idea of adding more seats. A lager stadium with only 25k at best in regular attendance will look even worse on TV.
Press box is a dump. As a former student assistant coach at the college level, I have been in pressboxes throughout the sunbelt, cusa, and SEC.
Ours is a shed compared to the other 40 or so I've seen.
The worst was the old FIU pressbox----which was a double wide train on top of four wooded telephone poles..... And even they managed to move up into a better conference.

The press box will get completely redone. That's part of the whole idea. And as far as looks go, you don't plan on capacity by what looks right if we have a low turnout.

Why didn't you just relay your worries to the ole boys you sat next to?
