  1. UL Baseball Louisiana vs Lamar

    Cajuns to battle Cardinals

BEAUMONT, Texas – Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun baseball team, winners of three of its last four outings, will play only four more mid-week games the rest of the 2003 season.

Two of them are against long-time rival Lamar, and the first of those comes tonight when the teams square off at 7 p.m. at LU’s Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The Cajuns (10-21) got back to the break-even point in Sun Belt Conference play over the past weekend by taking two of three games from Middle Tennessee.

Those wins, combined with a 9-8 mid-week win over Tulane the previous Wednesday, gave the Cajun squad its best one-week record so far this season.

All those games were at home, though, and UL Lafayette has won only once on the road this season heading into tonight’s game against the Cardinals (19-8).

Lamar, meanwhile, will be glad to get home after playing its last seven games on the road.

  2. Default Louisiana WINS 7-4

BEAUMONT, Texas — Austin Faught, Thad Montgomery and Jeff Martinez combined to check Lamar on only six hits, and Louisiana’s baseball team got all the offense it needed in only two innings in taking a 7-4 win over the host Cardinals here Tuesday night.

The Cajuns (11-21), winners of four of their last five games, got a key two-run single from Ryan Core in a three-run third inning, and Kevin Preau’s RBI triple highlighted a two-run eighth frame as Louisiana snapped a three-game loss streak to the Cardinals (19-9).

The win was also the Cajuns’ first at Vincent-Beck Stadium since 1997 and halted a five-game loss streak at the Lamar diamond, along with giving Louisiana more momentum entering this weekend’s key Sun Belt Conference series at New Mexico State.

Faught (2-2) allowed only four hits and two earned runs in six and one-third innings in getting his first win since Feb. 23.

“We needed him to step up and pitch big on the road,” said Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux, “and we did a good job as hitters. We were able to put some big innings together.”

The Cajuns, who meet NMSU Friday at 8 p.m. in the series opener, rapped out 10 hits with Jason Wilson and Preau getting three hits each.

  3. Default Preau Sparks Offense As Cajuns Top Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team takes a 7-4 win here at Vincent-Beck Stadium against the Lamar Cardinals. The Cajuns end a four game losing streak here in Beaumont and have now won four of their last five games to improve to 11-21 on the season.

Louisiana junior left-hander Austin Faught made the start against Lamar left-hander Josh Gray. Faught was on top of his game early as he held the Cardinals scoreless through the first five innings in route to the win.

The Cajuns took an early one run lead when catcher Ryan Core hit a one-out double and scored on a two-out RBI single by right fielder Kevin Preau in the second inning.

Louisiana extended the lead to 4-0 in the third inning after opening the inning with three consecutive bunts. Jason Wilson reached first after bunting to open the inning on an error by the Lamar first baseman. Third baseman Dallas Morris laid down a perfect bunt single to give the Cajuns runners on first and second with no outs. Corey Coles bunted for the third consecutive time and reached safely on another Lamar fielding error. Wilson came around from second to score the second run of the game on the play. Lamar pitcher Josh Gray struck out the next two Cajun batters before Ryan Core drove home two runs for Louisiana with his second hit of the night.

Louisiana added another run in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Kevin Preau came around to score the fifth run of the game on a wild pitch from Gray after reaching base earlier in the inning on a single.
