Far from a done deal. Still a lot of issues to overcome. But the infrastructure for a school already exists here as third- and fourth-year students come to Lafayette in many cases to learn at LGMC and UHC.

Oh ok. My assumption. Well, still give me Lafayette. At least over Shreveport.

Number one employer in terms of people employed: healthcare.
Number one in terms of payroll: oil and gas.

---And Rick also a perfect time for the Lturs, Monroes, McNeeses, etc to complain----Don't think that their voices will matter in this however!!! I still think of how McNeese voted the extra use of funding for athletics down because we would get a larger share of the pie---And the irony is that not only does LTUR not get their Med school in Shreveport, but we get one!!! Not happy campers in RUSTon today!!!

I didn't think having the University Medical Center yanked from their grasp for mismanagement would slow them down much. ...

But I didn't think they would get back up to speed this fast.

    Boom -

We don't have a medical school. We have some sort of affiliation with LSU.

Can't they at least let us know what is needed for it to be a 100% UL operation? That way we could at least know that there are steps that we can take to 'make this right.'
I'm also consoled when I remember how UNO used to be under the lsu thumb too.....but they were able to rise above it. I'm thinking we could do the same thing.....

And I wonder who will get 'top billing': would love it if this would be a UL school, that is associated with lsu....

What will it take...The complete and utter destruction of LSU's stranglehold on the state of Louisiana's higher education legislation. Unless they are wiped from the face of the Earth...they will never let it happen.

So I want to know if I have this right. This wouldn't technically be a new medical school. It would be affiliated with the LSU Med School in New Orleans and degrees would still say LSU School of Medicine New Orleans?

Either way, I know this will be great for Lafayette, but so many of us have been wanting a medical school at UL for so very long now. I can't say I feel great about having a LSU branded medical school put roots down in the city. I doubt T-Joe has much power here, but I sure hope he is fighting to get this new school established under UL.

Especially if the medical sits where Lourdes used to be, which is practically on our campus. I would hope our administration is either fighting for the med school to be under the UL name or leveraging that for other things that will benefit our university.

LSU med students are already training in Lafayette under the agreements with LGMC and UHC. I was told by someone at the meeting that UL med school is a political non-starter. UL faculty may be involved in adjunct roles, etc. Only way to get it done is via partnership, apparently.
