Thread: Kennedy: LA needs new med school; Lafayette is ideal

Default Kennedy: LA needs new med school; Lafayette is ideal

Our state has a doctor shortage. A third of our people live in a federally designated primary care shortage area. More than 2 million Louisianians lack the access to specialist physicians enjoyed by people who live in wealthier states.

Louisiana’s physician shortage is probably going to get worse. More of our doctors (28 percent) are 60 or older than are under 40 (19 percent). Our three medical schools — LSU New Orleans, LSU Shreveport and Tulane — graduate about 450 doctors a year, but not all of them stay in Louisiana. (In 2012, 108 out of 171 graduates of LSU Medical School in New Orleans remained in Louisiana; for Tulane’s Class of 2012, it was 35 out of 177.)

Dont kid yourself into thinking a medical school hee would be put under UL. The city of Lafayette might get a medical school but just like the one in Shreveport it will be under the "flagship". They will not give that prestige or potential powerbase to UL or anyone else.

Fine. Let's lease the old OLOL building to LSU at a premium and dedicate the money to the infrastructure and the athletic department. THat way, we could use the evil empire to finance our growth.

No kidding ... torn down? Did they tear down the parking garage too? Is there any word on what the U plans to do with that space?

Wasn't it a few years back one of our ULS brethren hit a panic button claiming we were trying to claim UMC as our own, which was quickly followed with new p&g signage at UMC?

    I agree, trolling for votes.

Lourdes...heavy demo equipment starting to be removed from site this week.

I'm pretty sure the P&G signage referenced is no longer there.

Default New momentum for UL medical school?

Thought this might have already been posted . . .

"Both Durel and Kennedy said they were unsure of what university the medical school would be affiliated with if it became a reality, but they assume it would be the University of Louisiana at Lafayette."

"they assume it would be the University of Louisiana at Lafayette."

Of course this is the only viable option but someone needs to send them the BoR Supremacy video.
