With he and Smart being brought in for a second workout, I went to a couple Lakers boards to see their feelings on who they may draft. There are some that want to trade the pick for a veteran. Many of them have pie-in-the-sky hopes that Joel Embiid falls to them. A lot are settled in on Julius Randle. There are a few that like a couple of darkhorse players that I've never heard of. To my surprise, however, none of them seem to dismiss Payton as a draft pick. Knowing how Laker fans are, I went there expecting to see a lot of "PLEASE take Smart, I do not want this small school guy that shot up the boards" kind of stuff, and I've seen very little. Now, he's also nobody's first choice. The consensus that I've seen seems to be that he's most people's 3rd choice behind their favorite and one other guy (for the people that aren't on the Embiid train, it seems to be 1. Randle 2. Smart 3. Payton, with some people swapping Randle and Smart). It pleasantly surprised me that they're open to taking him at 7.
They would like another pick in the 1st round, though, so there's also some talk they'll try to trade down into the back half of the lottery and pick up another 1st from a team that has two picks this year (for example, the Bulls pick 17 and 19, the Suns pick at 14, 18 and 27, etc.); some who like Payton would prefer a scenario of trading down and getting him there.
