His Team was something like 9-2 and made it to the playoffs.
He is a class act.
I think you're on to something that happens way to often. Schools like UL just assume they won't have a chance and better put their efforts somewhere else.
I have a friend whose son is being recruited heavily and has already received offers from Alabama, Florida State, U. of Miami. However he is leaning to a mid major due to the relationship with the coach recruiting him. Not every kid is wowed by the LSU's and Alabama's of this world.
Obviously we need to put our efforts where we'll get the best results but should not shy away of selling ourselves to recruits.
I still think if we could get the Lafayette area to step up and back UL Athletics like it should, we could sell a lot more athletes on coming here. Many people in this state and elsewhere believe Lafayette, is one of the best places to be.
Recruiting locals really helps in attendance. When you have Louisiana players on a team, it makes a difference. The UL Softball team gets only between 400-700 in attendance at home games, but with few exceptions, when UL travels to away games, the bleachers at the away games are empty. To have 700 fans watching a softball game is amazing, maybe it's because 18 of the 24 girls on the team are from Louisiana.
One of the exceptions to "empty bleachers" is Texas A&M. Of the 15 girls on the Texas A&M team, fourteen are from Texas. They averaged well over 1,000 fans at each home game. Locals!
How many football players are from Louisiana?
I looked at the roster and counted 40 Louisiana players. That does not include the incoming freshman which will bring us to around 50. With 85 scholarships, that means about 60% of our players are from in state. Keep in mind that the Houston area has many Cajun alumni who live there and it is as close as north LA. We have several Houston area kids on the team.
First, let me say I like recruiting local players as much as the next guy (or gal)....
However, methinks the softball teams fantastic winning percentage over the last several years has a little to do with it as well. I'd be willing to bet that if the football team started winning at a similar percentage the stands would be full no matter where the players came from......
I can't speak to softball but more than anything if we had more 9-3 and 8-4 seasons versus 3-9 and 4-8 seasons in football we would have more folks out watching.
Not to mention the two questions that always come up when talking about a local talent. Does he want to play at UL? Is he qualified?
If you can answer those two questions "yes" and sign a local player with the talent of a Tyrell Fenroy or Yobes Walker then by all means let's get him.
