My dad always said that "an expert is some(one) from 500 miles away with a briefcase."

That bit of wisdom swirled through my mind during the search for President Ray Authement's successor, and I prayed that the search would not end with such an "expert."

For outsiders and those with "proverbial" briefcases, it must be understood that UL is different from other universities in that it is not just a university. It is also a culture. It lies at the heart of one of the most unique cultural locales in all of these United States.
