No way the premiums would be that high...

I got this from an article in 2001 about the Bucs losing their liability insurance after Sept 11th.

    >
"The sports authority paid $266,167 in premiums this year for property, liability and auto insurance at Raymond James and three area golf courses it manages, up 30 percent from the 2000-2001 season."
    >

They serve beer and also have all the other things listed insured. Their stadium also seats 65000. Also in the article they said that they should expect a 30 percent increase in premuims which would bring it to about 346000. Lets assume incorrectly that this only covers the stadium with the 65000 people in it. That is $5.32 per person per year. ONE BEER per person per year, which we know they sell more than that easily in a years time. So our 35000 seat stadium should expect a yearly premium of about 185,000. Per year. Probably less IMHO, because we play less home games.

An even better reason to sell beer at football games. We could make a profit for football instead of barely breaking even or falling just below the red.

I graduated this spring so I am fairly close to this situation. The reality is that because people can't drink in the stadium, you have to get totally loaded before the game starts because you have four hours of sobering to do. (This certainly does not apply to even a majority of fans, but definitely is an issue). Many fans sneak alcohol in the game. I think the no alcohol is a big reason that a lot of people just stay tailgating in their cars. It is an excellent way to make money for the program and it has not harmed the atmosphere at the Tigue or Cajundome in any way. I see huge potential upside and low potential downside.

Ah, I guess you really don't have to get smashed before the game. I like to drink as much as the next fan, but being totally drunk or staying out in the lot looks like a big excuse. No problem with selling some beer in the stadium, even some frozen drinks is not a problem and has lots of upside.

To be honest I am quite torn about this issue of alcohol being sold at Cajun Field. While financially it could aid us, the concern is do we really want to open ourselves up to the potential ramifications that could come along with selling alcohol?

Honestly, I don't really care one way or another. I try to limit my intake of $7-$10 beers anyway. Having experiences buying beer at games in the Super Dome (and at U-Hou.) many times as well as at our own basketball games in the Cajundome, I've never seen any trouble come out of it. I really doubt it makes big money for us though.

i could see a 10% bump in attendance if it were available at the game. As you said most people cannot make too much progress in drinking due to the fact that the lines are very long.

The only sport that makes money at this university is baseball...

and it is because of the beer sales.

Do the Cajuns get all of the beer sales revenue during basketball?

Is there a NCAA rule against selling beer? If not, are there any other programs around the nation that sell beer?

Ok, I don't know the NCAA rules book that well but as pointed out in this thread (if there is a rule against it) then we must be breaking it by selling beer at baseball and basketball games. Tulane and U-Hou both sell beer at their football games so they must break it too.

I can't find any evidence beer sales increase their football attendance. It might but I don't see it. It might increase the Saints' attendance but I don't see how you measue it.

If we want more attendance from beer then just round up 2000-3000 drunks and give them beer to go in and watch games. If we want more money then I suggest getting the local business community more thoroughly involved in Cajun athletics.

Having said that, I'd buy maybe $10 woth (or 2 beers) instead of walking out to the car at halftime. Although I do need the exercise from the walking.

    _

I don't mind selling beer at games, but not at $7 like they do at UH. Make it something more reasonable that students can afford and the general public as well, for that matter. What do we charge at the CDome or for baseball games?
