Thread: Should Beer be sold at The Swamp?

Beer is not served at the stadium due to university administration. If they want to make money, sell beer.

The revenue generated from beer sales alone could offset the operation costs of a football gameday and then some. (exaggerated guess)

Not that exaggerated at all. I used modest number in calculating beer sales at Cajun Field. Lets just say we bring in an additional 5000 people into the games who drink beer on top of the 3000 people I figured in earlier. 8000 people drink 3 beers a piece at 7 bucks a pop would equal to $168,000 dollars per game. If we average that many folks and drinks for a five game season like we have this year it would bring in $840,000 bucks.

who gets the money from the beer booth outside of the stadium?

It seems like a double standard that you can buy beer while tailgating right outside of the stadium gate and still on the property, but not in the stadium.

Herby S.----I guess he has the booth set up and maybe or maybe not splits with the ADept!!!

I just pull my truck up there and start selling it. No one ever tells me anything. I give the profits to my girlfriend.... just kidding of course.... or am I?

It really isn't a "double standard"... it's one part capitalism and one part dumbazzism.

Actually, one of my first experiences with the beer trailer was to purchase a cool cup of sudsy beverage while heading up the ramp to go into the stadium... as I got to the ticket line I was instructed I could not take it into the stadium... I said to myself "aha... entrepreneurial genius... they have gotten me to purchase a beer that I must either toss after only an addictive sip... or I must down this beer in only seconds... either of which will have me purchasing at least a second beer inside the stadium"... much to my surprise... there was no second beer inside the stadium. Entrepreneurial midgets.

From that standpoint I would have to argee. Besides, who knows what KIND of "fans" we would be attracting to games?? If it's just going to be a bunch of guys sitting around drinking beer and acting stupid the whole game, then I DON'T want it!! _
I've also considered that possibility. However, I look at it this way. Our fans don't get too rowdy at basketball games or baseball games, and honestly I don't think selling beer will attract any more fans to our football games anyway. I do think that it will be a huge money maker though and here's the kicker.....

It might actually get those lazies out in the parking lot to come inside and watch the dang game.

There is so much speculation that goes on around here, I'm starting to lose track...do we know this for a fact? And if so, what is the reason? I'd like to know what an actual university administrator has said on this topic.

If my memory serves me right, the reason why we do not sell beer in the stadium is because of the insurance premium. I have heard that it would be roughly a 1 million dollar premium and of course cheap ass Doc A would not spring for that type of expense.

YES!!!!!! that's why basketball and baseball games are so much fun. Well not the only reason, but it sure does make the games more enjoyable.

Boomer and I talked for a minute with David Walker before the Vermilion & White Game, and in no uncertain terms his answer to Beer at the Swamp was "NO"

He mentioned insurance and the current caterer, and that the reason there was beer at the New Orleans Bowl was because they had their own insurance.

I was left with the impression there were other reasons that he didn't want to get into.

That $840,000 figure you used as an example earlier looks like a gross figure and doesn't appear to include the wholesale cost of beer, ice and so on. If you add additional insurance premiums to the cost of the beer, selling it might result in a loss.

On the other hand, I know for a fact that beer is sold at Tulane and U-Hou games so I feel as certain as I can be the sellers are not taking a loss on it.

In Tulane's case I don't think the university gets anything off Super Dome concession sales anyway.
