  1. UL Baseball Cajuns hope for better fortunes in Sun Belt play

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — There may have never been a team more happy to get to the start of Sun Belt Conference baseball play than Louisiana.

The Ragin’ Cajuns have struggled in the pre-conference season with a 6-18 record and losses in 11 of their last 12 games. But, tonight, a whole new season begins when the Cajuns open their 24-game league slate.

The Cajuns travel to meet Western Kentucky in the three-game weekend series opening tonight at 6 p.m. and including a 2 p.m. Saturday game and the 1 p.m. Sunday finale.

To head coach Tony Robichaux, though, it doesn’t matter where they are or who they’re playing. He’s just glad that league play is here.

“In the situation we’re in, mid-week games don’t get you to the NCAA’s,” he said. “Weekends do.”

  4. Default Cajuns grab 1-0 victory in game 2

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Andy Gros did his job for nine innings Saturday, and Brad Saloom made that effort stand up in the ninth inning for Louisiana’s baseball team.

Saloom beat out a two-out infield single in the top of the ninth inning that scored Kevin Preau from third base, providing the game’s only run as the Ragin’ Cajuns posted a 1-0 victory over Western Kentucky in the middle game of their Sun Belt series.

Gros (2-4) scattered six hits and fanned eight in a complete-game pitching performance, facing just two batters over the minimum through seven innings in leading the Cajuns (7-19, 1-1) to their first league win. The senior lefthander, pitching on his 22nd birthday, also picked off two Hilltopper runners in the fourth, but had to pitch out of trouble in the last two.

Gros and WKU junior righthander Andy Baldwin (1-4) matched scoreless innings until the ninth when Bryan Sneed drew a leadoff walk and pinch runner Preau was sacrificed to second by Phillip Hawke. Matt Wilhite gave up a fly ball to Rhett Buras that moved Preau to third, and Saloom beat out the infield hit.

  5. Default Cajuns stumble at WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — UL's chances of taking a Sun Belt Conference baseball series win Sunday afternoon were pretty much gone early.

Western Kentucky scored seven runs before the Ragin’ Cajuns recorded five outs, and that was all the Hilltoppers needed in a 7-3 win that gave the hosts a 2-1 advantage in the opening conference series of the season.

WKU (12-7, 2-1) got four runs on four hits in the first inning off Cajun starter Jordy Templet, and Hilltopper third baseman Tim Grogan greeted UL reliever Austin Faught with a three-run homer in the second.

After that, WKU put it in the hands of starter Kenny Hughes (2-1), who scattered six hits and fanned nine in eight and one-third innings of work.

The only offensive noise for the Cajuns (7-20, 1-2) was provided by Ryan Core’s solo homer in the second inning and a pair of runs in the ninth.

That wasn’t nearly enough, even though Cajun righthander Kraig Schambough turned in nearly seven scoreless innings in relief, allowing the ‘Toppers only two hits and three base runners after Western’s early explosion.
