UL — University of Louisiana President Joseph Savoie said Wednesday he will be looking to raise staff numbers in some critical areas on campus in the coming year.
Savoie, who was named to replace longtime ULL President Ray Authement last year and took office last week, said staffing in some areas had fallen off when Authement had to make cuts in lean budget years.
“That’s a natural result of underfunding,” Savoie said.
He said Authement’s sound financial management means the university now has the funding to hire employees in key areas to improve efficiency.
“That’s just so the place runs more effectively,” Savoie said.
He said that being understaffed leads to inefficiencies in operations, citing as an example the dearth of assistant deans on campus leading to deans being bogged down in paperwork instead of being able to do the work of improving their departments.
