Chicken or egg?
After a brief reading of the paper it became clear that half of those outside of the Lafayette area contacted did not support the name change. In fact those that did support the name change were those who are most likely to give financial, and personal support to the university.
The paper implies that perhaps the name change caused those who would have given support without the name change to channel away from the university.
It is my position that is not the case. Those who support the university would do so with or without a name change, and those others would not have supported their alma mater in any case. For them the name change is meaningless and probably an headache in that they must update their resume. I would venture to say that almost to an individual they would be supporters of the flagship under any name.
It is indeed sad that about half of those who attended UL seem to do so as their only option, when it is in fact their best option.
