Thread: Ideal Athletics Program

    Default Ideal Athletics Program

Today's headline is another sports essay, asking "What is the Ideal Athletics Program?"

As always, I urge you post your comments there, rather than here. I am trying to stimulate discussion with these articles.

A program with just baseball and softball would be fine by me.

What conference do you suggest we join after we are kicked out of the SBC?

One correction: someone questioned the 33K for Stanford football, when Cal was removed. That should have been 38K, not 33K. Rather than cause any confusion, I just deleted that part of the comment. The other comments were based on the ~40K figure, so nothing changes.

12-0 in football would be a good start.

Hey Fun---Thought I would ask it here---why is Tech's increase more than ours and why do they charge $4761 as compared to UL's $3633 ???? If we had just the same tuition we would generate almost 80 mil as compared to our 60 plus mil!!!!!What gives and why????

Clever cleaver, posting there with moderation here should keep UL of Today looking squeaky clean.

I'm not sure what you're getting at... the only reason I noted the correction here, is because the error was caught so quickly after publication. Since I post here almost immediately after publication, I assumed that no one else would have seen the bad data.

Do you see a problem with about how it was handled?

PS None of you posted over there about the article. Is that because you all agree?

Or is it you just don't care about the impact athletics has on the University & community?

I did and I am tired of losing so many football games.

    You ask.

"Say we we were given a choice. We can choose an athletics program that wins more games than anyone, but doesn't get much community support. Or, we can choose a program that doesn't win all that much, but has enthusiastic community support."

    My answer.

Winning "more than anyone" is a practical impossibility and "much" and "enthusiactic" fan support is difficult to quantify and so it is really difficult to answer you.

The bottomline is I want a competitive athletic program that enjoys solid community support.

By "competitive" I mean one that regularly competes for conference championships and NCAA post season tourney wins. By "solid community support" I mean a program that consistently draws enough fans to fill our existing sports venues close to capacity.

I could go on but I'll stop there.

    Geaux UL!

I read the article and posted a response on ULToday. Shown below is the beginning of that response. If you want to read my entire response, you have to go to ULToday.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

You asked if winning is more important or is community support more important. You cannot win without some community support. If all the sports struggled like football has in the last decade, our support would virtually disappear. With no support whatsoever, softball would not have accomplished what it did. With increased community support, football would improve. You mentioned Stanford as a winner without strong support. They are a private school in a major league city. Therefore it is not surprising their support is limited.
