    You ask.

"Say we we were given a choice. We can choose an athletics program that wins more games than anyone, but doesn't get much community support. Or, we can choose a program that doesn't win all that much, but has enthusiastic community support."

    My answer.

Winning "more than anyone" is a practical impossibility and "much" and "enthusiactic" fan support is diffcult to quantify and so it is really difficult to answer you.

The bottomline is I want a competitive athletic program that enjoys solid community support.

By "competitive" I mean one that regularly competes for conference championships and NCAA post season tourney wins. By "solid community support" I mean a program that consistently draws enough fans to fill our existing sports venues close to capacity.

I could go on but I'll stop there.

I guarantee a situation where we win more games than anyone ( I assume "anyone" means conference and state schools here-not BCS members) and have little community support will never occur. Winning will breed support. Cajuns have a lot of pride and will automatically be drawn to a winner. Also, a situation where we win very little and have strong community support will also not occur. The support will cause us to win.

In our situation, increased support is instrumental in improving the record on the field.

The ideal program would have Boxing, Wrestling, Gymnastics and Trampoline not to mention a world class Weightlifting team.

The ideal program would also do well year in and year out (top-40 and above) in the Pentathlam.

Read the article and here's what I posted over there:

"In the very first days of my college career, I was witness to what I consider a PERFECT example of an athletic program that showed the balance of community support and solid performance on the field/court. That example is OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY. To be clear, I'm NOT talking about the Sooners. In the 2 years that I was at OSU, the football team didn't win more than 4 games in a season, but EVERY SINGLE home game was sold out, in a stadium that held about 55,000 people at that time (1979-1981). What makes that statement interesting, is that OSU had a student population of about 22,000, situated in a town with a population of only 20,000. You do the math..."

NO. Actually, he left off Men's and Women's swimming and diving. We could get a lot of good kids from all over South Louisiana to fill that team and be competitive.
