Based on teams win/losses and their strength of schedule
It's weighted at different percentages for your win/losses and your opponents win/losses with more points given for road wins...

I'm sure a few others may be more knowledgeable on the subject..

Someone please fill me in, always confused on this. RPI is more of a strength of schedule rating or an actual rating using a variety of data?

It's pretty simple. Basically, its worthless until enough teams play each other.

RPI = (WP * 0.25) + (OWP * 0.50) + (OOWP * 0.25)

Where WP is Winning Percentage, OWP is Opponents' Winning Percentage and OOWP is Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage.

"RPI formula values each road victory as 1.3 instead of 1.0. Each home win will be valued at 0.7 instead of 1.0. Conversely, each home loss will count 1.3 against a team’s RPI and each road loss will count 0.7 against a team’s RPI. Neutral-site games will retain the same value of 1.0."

RPI is almost predetermined as they will give every conference points for their name. Have you noticed how our conference has been doing head to head against other conferences. Our conference is way tougher than anyone in the money conferences will ever admit. Only in America can you be one of the last 4 teams standing and end up ranked 9th in the country. Rankings are prejudiced to say the least and absurd to say the most. Go Cajuns!!!

I think you are thinking about rankings being predetermined. RPI exists for this exact reason.
