Thread: The Mystery of Shawn Long's Foul Trouble

  1. Default The Mystery of Shawn Long's Foul Trouble

Shawn Long getting into early foul trouble was a problem early in UL’s current 2013-14 season, and – after it happened again in the Ragin’ Cajuns’ last outing, a loss last Saturday night at Georgia State – coach Bob Marlin suggested it’s becoming an issue again late in the season.

it's not rocket science you have to be quicker with your feet, that's one thing i've noticed with him since he's been here. If your feet are slow you will try to make up with your hands to defend and that's when you get in trouble. Also you have to play smarter, know when to be aggressive and go for the block.

He wasn't doing anything last night that wasn't being done to him or Davenport under the goal. Yet, he gets in foul trouble. I'm not defending him 100%, but he's got the reputation now and that's hard to overcome.

You nailed it. The coaches talk to him about this ... he just has to want to work harder ... we will see.

--Coaches talk----coaches watch film---coaches set game plans----fact is that it is a lot easier to beat the Cajuns if Long is on the bench----(GAME PLAN) since we are in M/M most of the time have Long's guy post up and make all kind of moves to the basket and Long will probably foul him a couple of times---Long goes to the bench because of foul trouble----Cajun lose!!!

But the point is, especially in light of what I think you posted ... he has to work much harder on defense; move his feet and get set; you see him many times let the guy get past him and attempt a block, and get the foul.

They other team is coming at him; he has to work harder to get in position ... if he does we will be successful.

-----Can't argue with the defensive slacking without the initial foot movement in establishing position!!! But you know with back to the goal paint penetration and lateral feints, fouls could be called just about on every possession with the ball inside!!!

You know when we get good camerawork under the basket, and I mean GOOD, I tend to agree with the refs even if I did not live, or long and close up tv shots. Really good camera work often shows no contact and also the reach in foul.

It's pretty simple. As a coaching staff, show Long that currently he's projected as a first round pick next year. Tell him, "Imagine what you could be if you worked just a TINY bit harder"

  12. UL Basketball Re: The Mystery of Shawn Long's Foul Trouble

I think not harder but smarter. Long is awesome, and sometimes that gets him into foul trouble thinking he can do what is not really possible, thus sitting out most of a half or game. Sometimes you just intimidate and let them make the shot if they can.
