I understand that you are in charge of Ragin Cajun licensing and marketing, etc.

Regarding the attached picture, I have two questions…

    1. Since when are our official colors red and yellow? I thought they were vermilion and white?

    2. As a person who has multiple degrees from UL and who is a season ticket holder for multiple sports…Why is this one of my few options of UL apparel?

    JSD:
Thanks for writing and for your support of your alma mater and Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns.

In regards to your questions, our colors are vermilion (red) and white, with black as a secondary trim color.

Manufacturers produce products both the official colors of universities and in what they call "fashion lines" which incorporate what they consider to be the latest fashion colors that will appeal to certain buyers. These fashion colorsare popular. When the university is purchasing apparel (uniforms, giveaways, departmental shirts, etc), , however, we stick with the official university colors of red, white, and black.

As for this product being one of your few options, I invite you to visit a variety of the local retailers who carry our merchandise. There are about 20 retailers right here in Lafayette and some of them carry a wide variety of apparel options (particularly the sporting goods stores, University Bookstore, and Follett's).

Here's a link to the list of retailers for your reference:

Hope this information is helpful. Again, thanks Chris, for being a supporter.

    Me:
Thank you for your response. But please allow me to be frank, and kinda vent a little bit…

The reason I said that there are only a few options out there is more of a personal issue than an issue with how many stores carry UL stuff. I will not purchase anything with a pepper on it. I will not purchase anything, such as this sweater, that has yellow and orange colors on it. I will not purchase anything that has any sort of symbol that is on fire, etc. Honestly, I’m embarrassed to be seen in any of that, partly because it doesn’t look good, and partly because if I don’t respect the way it looks (as a supporter and major fan of the school), then how could others respect the way it looks. I’m not sure whose idea it was to begin incorporating all of UL and flames onto all our stuff, but it was not a good idea. There may have been some novelty associated with it in the beginning, but that has long since worn off.

I’m not sure if you noticed, but there were a large number of those sweaters on that rack, and every time I go into the Lafayette Academy, there are always a large number of items on all of the racks, mainly because this stuff is hideous. Granted, there are some fans out there that will purchase some of these things, if for no other reason than to do the school a favor. But, go to a baseball game this weekend and see how many people are wearing those sweaters, or something of a similar design. I can’t honestly think of ever seeing anyone at any game that is ever wearing anything that is yellow, which tells me that true fans don’t like it and are not buying it. If most UL fans and supporters decline to buy things with flaming logo’s and peppers on it, then how can we expect non-supporters to want to buy it?

I don’t mean to be critical of you, I’m just trying to vent a little bit and let my opinions be known. I’ve certainly learned that if you don’t like something, then you cannot be upset when it doesn’t change. I just seriously hope, as we have a new regime coming in to move our school forward, that the university takes a long, hard look at what is being sold with our name on it, how we market ourselves, how we portray ourselves, etc. I am of the opinion that it would benefit us greatly to change all of our logos, fonts, etc to something that’s a lot less cartoonish and minor league, and a lot more classy and respectable. We are fortunate to have a wonderful logo like the Fleur de Lis seen at the top of the page you linked. And we are also fortunate to have a great color scheme to work with, that’s fairly unique. I think that if we come up with something that better portrays UL as a legitimate university and not a junior college or a middle school, if we market that brand properly, and if we disallow manufacturers to make a mockery of our brand, then it would be more than worth the time and effort. While I have very limited knowledge of how these licensing and marketing agreements work, I feel that if we limited our colors to Vermilion and White (and black), instead of having all of those yellow and orange flames and peppers, and had that really nice Fleur de Lis with just ‘UL’ or ‘Louisiana’ or ‘Ragin Cajuns’ in a better font, associated with the shirt, then there would be a pretty good chance that this sweater would have been red and white (or red and black), would look a lot better, and would certainly be something that I would buy for myself or as a gift.

Again, thank you for your response and thank you for your time.

I did not recieve another response from her...I think I might have upset her. Oops. Hopefully, her and the rest of those responsible for this and other travesties at our school, will get their heads out of their collective asses and get their acts together. If not, then they should be fired, or moved to a janitorial position in the Physical Plant. _
For the record I don't entirely agree with all that you said but I'm impressed that you did a whole lot more than just whine about all of this clothes and hat stuff. If people don't see that every program has crappy looking stuff in the market then they aren't getting out much. I've seen some La'State stuff at like Walgreen's that not even their fans will wear. lol!

Awhile back I took the time and effort to contact Wright Waters in writing on a touchy issue for UL fans and he called me. We never did "see eye to eye" on what I wrote to him about but we must have talked for a good 30 minutes. I got some good insight on several things.

Didn't it first show up when the logos and uniforms were changed under Baldwin's watch? Not blaming him, just using that as a time reference. I think it came out of the "Pepper" marketing push or coincided with it. I think when the helmets were changed that year black face masks and trim appeared on the uniforms.

That's fine...I don't expect everyone to agree, but of course, my way is right and yours is wrong. :-)

To your point about all schools having bad stuff to wear...I totally agree. But, the biggest difference is that, to use LSU for example, they have some really nice stuff to go along with the crap. Ours is mostly crap and I think it has a lot to do with the pepper and the extra colors. Some of the LSU gear might have some silly designs or whatever, but you know that it will always be purple and gold. And, for the most part, you can always tell what stuff was bought from a nice store and what was bought from a gas station or Wal-Mart, but you can't always tell with ours. the problem is that we offer too many different logo choices and too many colors, so it allows the manufacturer to have to much (un)creative license. If we narrowed down the logo choices, and reduced the colors to vermilion and white (and maybe some black), then it would allow us to better control what people put our logo's on.

I also e-mailed Joe Savoie a few weeks back (haven't heard back from him yet, though I told him I didn't necessarily expect a reply) and mentioned my conversation with JSD and told him about all of my beefs related to our logos and colors, and what it does to our perception. But, I also talked a bit about having a deal with a company like Nike or Adidas or Under Armour. We've had a thread talking about Adidas becoming our Football Gear Provider. Whether or not it's true, I think it is something that we should do, and which ever company is chosen, we should outfit all of our teams with the same company. In my opinion, if we had an all sports gear contract with Adidas, for example, then not only could we have a better chance of staying consistent with our uni's year in and year out, but we could develop a relationship with that company and provide our fans with better gear, and also would be able to try to produce more authentic jerseys that won't be outdated every other season. I looked at our merchandise site and the authetic football jerseys we have up there are ugly and they don't look like what the team wears. Plus, the problem with the gear that the fans do have access to is more because of who makes it. Anyone who has a bunch of t-shirts lying around can get access to our logo's and make whatever crap they want, and it seems like that is what is happening. But, if we sent our logo's and preferred colors to Adidas, and said put our name on your T-shirts, Polo's, shorts, jackets, etc. then we would know that they would look good because those companies seldom do anything that looks as hideous as the jacket I already posted. Sure, some might not like this year's style of jacket or polo, but you would probably like next year's. Also, it helps with outside perception when people see our name and brand associated with reputable companies like that, and we might have the ability to post their logos around our fields and arenas.

Perhaps what you should have also mentioned is that all of this gear, mostly bad, comes with the names Louisiana Lafayette or UL Lafayette. That is the other problem with it. I will NOT purchase anything with Lafayette on it. That doesn't seem to be a problem for a lot of people, however. At the Super Softball Regional in Houston, I would say the majority of our fans had Louisiana Lafayette gear on. This just makes it that much tougher to get referenced as Louisiana. So, I have to go out and have my gear specially made with just UL on it. It is very frustrating to not be able to purchase what we want. I certainly hope Dr. S takes a stand on this name issue for athletics. That will certainly help in the merchandise that is sold, will make it more attractive to the public, therefore the stores will sell more gear, and the university will make more money off of the sale of licensed gear.

Nothing earthshaking. My main point was about the poster above actually doing more than just peeing in the wind about the clothes "issue".

Personally, I seek out the and purchase the "good stuff" and ignore the junk just like any discriminating buyer would do in any case. As as has been pointed out, it's out there (UL bookstore, Bell's and other places).

If in doubt just ask a guy like Gerald Hebert where he gets his Cajun apparel and hats. He is always dressed "in style".
