Thread: Next Big Thing: Ashley Brignac

  1. UL Softball Next Big Thing: Ashley Brignac

Superstar Pitcher of the Future #4:

Brignac also saw only limited action as a freshman for Louisiana-Lafayette, but she certainly made the most of her innings. Brignac led all NCAA freshmen pitchers with an average of 1.43 strikeouts per inning. She also ranked #3 in wins among D-1 freshmen pitchers with 31, and ranked #9 among D-1 freshmen in ERA (#35 overall). It’s scary to think about how much Brignac can improve in her 3 remaining years with Louisiana-Lafayette, and she may set a few NCAA all-time records before her time in collegiate softball is over.

Nice pub for Ashley, but gotta question a little bit about the blog entry, specifically:

If pitching in 44 of 67 games is limited action, I hate to see what this writer would consider a normal season.

Unfortunately for Brignac, she may run into the same problem that Angela Tincher did in 2008 with Virginia Tech: being a great pitcher on an otherwise mediocre team, and thus unable to make any progress in the WCWS.
Otherwise mediocre team? You don't go on the road and knock off the No. 9 and No. 8 seed and then beat the No. 1 team in the country with an otherwise mediocre team.

I'm sorry, it's great that Ashley and the softball team are getting some recognition, but at least get some of the facts straight.

Now that we have pitching down and locked for the next 3 years. We can strictly recruit the big bats and defense. And as insurance we can say we have 3 young pitchers who can get us to the world series and all we need you to do is hit the ball.

They didn't say this year's team was mediocre. But who knows about the future?

I understand that, but we're only losing 3 srs. this year, albeit those 3 are HUGE shoes to fill. But, I like our chances in finding 3 players to replace them.

That's my line of thinking. Replacing Tank and Soto will be difficult to do, especially Soto's mental toughness and leadership.

Brodhead will also be tough to replace, but if Codi Runyan can come back healthy, I think that'll be an upgrade, at the plate at least.

I might be counting those proverbial chickens before they hatch, but I think Gabby Bridges will fill in quite nicely for Tank next year (homers and RBI production-wise) and Bowers and Verde will have a much bigger role in the leadership category.

Plus, like someone said, with Brig, Boo and Britney locked into a solid rotation, I could easily see the Lotiefs being able to convince some big-time offensive players to come to Lafayette for the next few years.

You must have not seen Codi Runyan play short. She is very good at short. Broadhead played out of position to help the team, she was not a natural short stop.

I'm from Port Barre. Trust me, I've seen Codi play short.

She's a fantastic fielder, but I also know she's got potential to hit 15+ homers, so she'll be counted on heavily in the middle of that order next year.

I certainly wasn't knocking Codi's defensive prowess, just saying that she's going to provide a lot of lumber (or aluminum in this case).

There no more aluminum bats or alloys for that matter.
I've been in the dugout, the bats are all composite now...
