UL - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team picked up a trio of accolades as Michael Smith (Lafayette, La.), Devin Carrey (South Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) and Thomas Petts (North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) were honored as members of the 2008 Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association All-Louisiana Team.
The team was selected by members of the state’s sports information directors for the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Smith was named to the first team, while Carrey and Petts were both tabbed to the second team.
Smith, who was also named All-Sun Belt Conference, had a team best 73.35 stroke average on the season. He had five rounds in the 60s with a season low of 68. Smith boasted 12 rounds of par or better. He finished in the top-10 in five times with a third place finish at the Squire Creek Intercollegiate. Smith finished the Indian Classic nine under par in fifth place with three consecutive rounds below par.
Carrey had a 73.47 stroke average on the year and finished in the top-10 eight times with a pair of first place finishes. He medaled at the Mean Green Invitational as well as the Battle on the Bend. Carrey finished five tournaments under par and boasted 15 rounds of par or better. He had six rounds in the 60s with a season low of 66.
Petts had a 74.87 stroke average as a freshman with five rounds of par or better with a season low of 68 at the North Texas Classic where he finished fifth. He had a third place finish at the All-American Intercollegiate and a 13th place finish at the Battle on the Bend.
Jose Toledo of New Orleans and Megan McChrystal of LSU have been named Louisiana’s collegiate golfers of the year on the 2008 All-Louisiana Golf Team.
Joining Smith and Toledo on the men’s first team were Sigmundur Masson of McNeese State, David McKendrick of ULM and Matthew Harvey of Louisiana Tech.
Named to the women’s team along with McChrystal were Rebecca Kuhn and Amalie Valle, both of LSU, Angela Drane of ULM, Maggie Welch of McNeese State and Theunette Vander Walt of Nicholls State.
Selected for the men’s second team were Carrey and Petts, along with Greg Berthelot of Centenary, Andrew Loupe of LSU, Matthew Carvell of Southeastern Louisiana, Nathan McMullen of ULM and Hector Arias of UNO.
Named to the women’s second team were Alexis Rather of LSU, Sara Larsson of ULM and Jessica Garza and Chloe Mims of Centenary.
