In 1863, Union Gen. Nathanial Banks was ordered to lead troops from New Orleans to Port Hudson. A fortification, Fort Bisland, stood in the way near what is now Morgan City, and was the site of an artillery battle April 12-13. Confederate Gen. Richard Taylor withdrew his troops after learning that some of the Union soldiers had boated up the Atchafalaya, threatening to cut off his escape route.
