UL - Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns head baseball coach Tony Robichaux and his staff announced on Wednesday the signing of North Central Texas College's Chad Keefer (Sasakwa, Okla.) to a National Letter of Intent for the 2008-09 academic year.
Keefer, a two-year starter for the Lions at first base and catcher, batted .372 with 20 doubles, 12 home runs and 51 RBI this past season as he led NCTC to a 30-24 final record. He also had 131 total bases with a .668 slugging percentage, while banging out 73 hits. During his freshman season in 2007, he led the Lions in both home runs and RBI during the final month of the regular season, finishing the year with a .330 average. An injury relegated Keefer to first base for the majority of his freshman season.
"Chad is a talented multi-position right-handed hitter that should fit nicely in the middle part of our lineup next season," Louisiana assistant coach John Szefc said. "He gives us a quality defender at two different positions and also gives us much-needed power.
"He also comes from a solid junior college program that produced former Cajun Justin Merendino who played for us in 2004 and 2005."
In the fall of 2007, he was selected to participate in the Texas/New Mexico All-Star Game. Last summer, he was a 29th-round draft choice of the Los Angeles Dodges following his freshman season at NCTC. Keefer, who hails from Sasakwa, Okla., prepped at Byng High School where he earned All-Area and All-City honors. He was named to the Junior Sunbelt and McLoud Invitational All-Tournament teams. He holds the Byng school home run record with 20 bombs.
