It could have happened while he was alone, in the middle of nowhere. Hopefully, he heals up fine.

Probably too soon to ask, and if you'd rather not post the answer, I understand completely. But do they have any expectation of what he'll be able to do on the other side? For example, my grandmother had to learn to walk again. Feed herself. Things like that.
But her memory and personality and all motor skills above the waist were in tact.
