Only reason I bring up Marty was that he actually was blasted by the fans, and he had some really big wins. In his fifth season he beat Oklahoma two times, once as Sun Belt Champs in the NCAA, and once in the regular season.

I know I must have forgotten it, but I cannot recall one marquee win for Bob. Marty was bring in talent, and I keep hearing Marlin is not much of a recruiter. The Floyd led teams, and the Tommy Joe Eagle led teams would have eaten up the current SBC. The Western Kentucky team we beat would have beaten every team in the current SBC. We talking apple and oranges only similar counts on those apples and oranges.

Heading into year five, a half decade Mike, and I am waiting for the first sign, the first sign.
I am not sure what sign you are waiting for? Are you looking for a sign that we are making progress or a sign that we will soon again be a top southern mid-major? Signs of progress are the victories over La Tech and Houston, the highly ranked recruiting class, and the guys sticking with it despite some recent setbacks. I also don't see anything indicating we are on the cusp of being a major factor in the sport. I think you are saying that if a guy has not made a significant upgrade by his fourth year, you doubt it will ever occur. I understand that viewpoint but I view this as Year 2 due to what happened after 2012. There are only two scholarship players that were here 2 years ago. I know that is due to some decisions on assistant coaches and scholarships which Coach Marlin bears responsibility for. I think he would admit that and take the responsibility. Hopefully things have been learned from those mistakes and will not be repeated. At this stage, I have complete confidence the entire coaching staff is pulling in the same direction. That does not mean I think the team will have a long winning streak to end the year although I think they will win a few more and hopefully have a winning record against D1 teams. That has not happened since 2005. Still, they have been too inconsistent so far to indicate they are a complete enough team to put a streak together. The lack of an athletic inside player to go alongside Long has been a major factor all year and will continue to be. When they have had success they have overcome that by having one or two guys besides the big two be effective from the perimeter. That is something you cannot consistently count on. Hopefully Jonathon Stove (early signee who is scoring 30 regularly in his Sr. HS year) will be another guy who can score by getting to the rim. If so, we have the potential to take a big step next season.

By the way, Marty's teams did not beat the Sooners twice in the same season. The victory at Norman was either in 1990 or 1991 while the tournament win was in 92. Still, significant accomplishment for those guys. Had Tim Floyd not been at UNO and the American South officials allowed themselves to be intimidated by him, Marty would have a better reputation here. Don't forget how big a factor Butch Pierre was in that. When Butch left recruiting suffered and it was only a matter of time before a change would come due.

i like the man, Marlin, he is a competent coach. I hope he becomes so successful he gets us wins in the Big Dance. It is that I just do not think it happens.

I think we'll have a pretty good idea of where he stands after the season ends. At this point the mock draft sites tend to be just like the national media in that they don't get a good look at talent from schools like UL.

    I hope he stays!

They don't get a good look at schools like UL, so they just go ahead and throw him in the mix with the best 30 eligible players in the world? That makes sense.

Did he look like one of the best players in the country tonight, 2/8/14? He looked pretty ordinary and held in check by a pretty ordinary single individual. Two scouts there tonight, maybe that got him too worked up, but he did hit his free throws, and play good defense.

Did Hudspeth look like one of the hottest coaches against ULM or 2nd year FBS USA? Foolish to judge Hudspeth or Elfrid or anyone on a single performance. As Stevie P says, large sample size is what matters.

It blows my mind how so many UL fans don't give Elfrid the credit he is receiving. 95% of all the nba experts are saying he is first round material, either this year or next. That means out of every single eligible basketball player in the world, at worst, they are projecting him as a top 60 player. In the world. And people here say no way.

But let Scout.com say one of our fball commits is a 1*, not a 2*, and all hell breaks loose.

Yes, I think I said TONIGHT. EP has had several ok performances, this year. Screw the philosophy of Stevie P, the largest sample is in fact the full season to him.

No, Hud did not look like one of the hottest coaches, and he was not offered a job with a big time program as I recall. Maybe because of ULM, and USA, or getting blown out by BCS teams. And before you ask me how do I know he was not offered a BCS program job, well he is still here.

the bloggers may not but the scouts do, they have been at every home game and many practices looking and they like what they see. However it would be nice if we could for 5 minutes stop the Jadeveon Clowney routine where we build a kid up to something no one could live up to then trash him for not being something he never said he was.

Elfrid did do some good things today despite not having a high FG%. I would have liked to see more out of what I saw on the winning play. Penetrate and dish to open perimeter guys. I know he did it some early but the shots were not falling until late in the game. When the outside was not working, he likely decided to be aggressive in attempts to draw fouls. There were plenty of times when he could have gone to the line as he drove but did not get the call. Texas State would not have complained had that happened a couple of times. That simply was not getting called today (generally on both sides) so something else had to be tried. By the way, I thought Shawn Long worked hard the whole game and had a good attitude the entire contest. That was nice to see.
