Yes, there are still games left to be played, but obviously, the number of errors compared to last year is not that far off.

    Next excuse....
The above is a bit misleading because the 2007 total includes 16 more games, which is significant. The bottom line is that the Cajuns are 10 points off defensively from last season. And last season would be considered a mediocre season defensively. A .952 fielding percentage (this season) is simply poor and would rank at or near the bottom of a lot of conferences.

Glad you posted that. I have only seen a few games, but you can really see a decline in the infield defense from previous years. The other thing we are really bad at is strikeouts. I do not have any stats, but it seem like we strikeout more than most teams. That would be OK if we were a power hitting team, but we are really loaded with single and gap hitters (I'm trying to be kind). Anyway, this is a lost season. LEts hope we can make the SBC Tourny and gain some tournament experience.

Next year will be sweet for UL!

I did mention there are still games left to be played, so the 84 errors will go up. We still have at least 11 games left in 2008 (game 2 tonight and at least 2 in the tournament). But still, the number of errors is relatively close to the number in 2007. The difference between the two years will likely end up being immaterial.

this is a brand new cliche' to me. please explain the etiology of it; i may use it if you show me it makes any sense.

My opinion....most have people have come to the conclusion this team is bad. If we lose that reinforces their belief and makes them feel they know whats going on. If we win it goes against what they believe.

Nebraska has 45 errors. LSU has 52 errors. A team at this level can't make 2 or 3 a game and win more than they lose unless they score big time. The fact is we have been last in the conference in fielding the whole year. We scored 440 runs in 2007 and have just 225 this year. I wish it was different.

Very nice. I cannot disagree with your opinion on the current situation.

I know what you stated and you implied there was not much of a difference between last year and this year. My point was that you under emphasized the difference (16 games is a lot of games). But more importantly, the fielding percentage difference is 10 points (.952 this season). This is significant. And last year was not what I would consider a good year defensively. Robichaux's better defensive teams have been nearly 20 points higher. It has been a while since a Cajun team fielded less than .960. You probably need to go back to the '99 and '00 teams. But those teams were also better defensively, yet offset their biggest weakness with solid offensive lineups and stellar pitching.

I certainly think it will improve as we are playing a number of young players. But defense has played a significant role in the problems this season.

Make no mistake, I think that the offensive woes are the biggest contributor to the struggles this season. But defense has played a significant part.

Case in point, tonight in the 9th. One throw away from a win. Hopefully the Cajuns can muster another run at the Huskers in extras. But they had better play good defense the rest of the way.

That's a given... I don't regard it as an excuse anymore for anything. It's like having an inoperable malignant tumor in your rectum all of your life. When you look around the state, everyone else other than LSU got granted one as well. It's called fairness. Eventually, you find other ways to either rid yourself of the cancer, or you learn to live with it, and thrive despite it. You can count on LSU hanging around your rectum for constant inspection, but do not count on them to assist with the cancer or to stop prodding your cavities at their leisure. The only way LSU would help you get rid of that rectal tumor is if someone discovered it had value... then it would be taken away from you and claimed to have originated in LSU's rectum... after vast sums of state money gold plated the tumor, a large privately funded sanctuary would be built to house the coveted rectal tumor.

It's a given. That pain in the azz is here to stay and UL and others need to stop arguing about it.
