You could take every college level track athlete in the state and all put them on UL's track team and we would still struggle to win the Belt. LSU does not win with locals unless Jamaica has been annexed by the Banana Republic AKA Louisiana. _
jamaica me very happy by noticing my modest little post.

cajun4, it was a joke; i warned the other poster away from sarcasm, and then posted my own. of course the sun belt, or even a division 16 conference school could beat a local hi-school champ. cheese and rice, take it easy.

Track & Field Re: New Track coach

Ok track fans and all types of UL fans, we have a track coach. He will lead our track program with or without our help. I can assure you this that with your help and positive talk his job and our program will be MUCH more sucessful than without your support.

Lets get track off and running(pun intended)!

Daddy, I wonder if you would be so cheerful and positive if Robe resigned and we replaced him with, say, Wayne Grenfeld, a two time Louisiana HS Coach of the Year with no collegiate experience?

You need to remember that historically, Track has been MUCH more successful nationally than has baseball.

I'm not knocking Coach Mafouz; I think he can consistantly finish in the middle of the pack in the SBC, which will be enough to satisfy the University and Athletic Administrations, though not the real fans of UL Track. I just think we should have done a better job of searching for someone who can come in and return UL to it's former position of being a top 20 finisher in the NCAA's on a fairly regular basis. I fervently hope I am proven wrong in my assessment of both Coach Mafouz' ability to recruit [ I KNOW he can coach well enough to win if he has the athletes], and in my assessment of the committment of the Administration to actual SUCCESS, rather than lip service.

POINT: I would bet that any coach can be successful if they are good recruiters. Get the horses and even the average coach looks good if he can keep them healthy and in school.

POINT: If few people outside the area know this choice, get ready for low to less than average results.

POINT: Other schools will crucify UL in the recruiting trenches.

POINT: This will only work if he brings coaches aboard who have a strong history of recruiting experience to make up for that which he does not have.

CONCLUSION: it ain't gonna be pretty for the token sports.

QUESTION: Who did they actually interview and what happened to the Olympic coach who told a number of UL people he would come for the same money they paid the last coach?

While money was not the issue for Boo Schexnider, commitment was. The administration/athletic dept. was not willing to make real commitments for Silvey, and they were going to treat Boo the same.

Silvey did the next coach a favor. He kicked as many of the useless scholarship athletes off the team as the administration would allow. However, the suit and tie buracrats in the A.D. didn't like that, as it hurt the university's APR rating.

Maffouz may not be a top-notch college coach, but he has the same no BS style that he portrayed during my time as a high school and college track athlete, then he should, at least, carry out the same discipline style as Silvey.

And that's what the program needs right now.

I have a Question Re: New Track coach

    For the record...

    for everyone...

and with no offense to anyone...

It is my pretty good understanding that Boo Schexnayder did apply but never even received a phone call back from UL.

Now that, if true, would be a low-down, crying shame. No excuse for the lack of a phone call. Common courtesy would require it. IF true.

I just got off the phone with a contact in BR. It is true and everyone who has ever spent a dime at UL should be P______D! There was a good chance of getting him, becasue he would have come for the same money and budget they gave Silvey. Added to that would have been the pockets that the faithful would have opened that no one was willing to open for Silvey. I saw Scout.com and Jurisprudence there has some good comments. This regime may be changing at the top, but the same bafoons who make lame decisions are still going to be around. What on God's green earth are they thinking about by not even talking to the guy? Geeeze! And to think I was hard on Chucker. He must have known the bafoons would continue to make bafoon decisions.

I would suggest that you call David Walker and ask his about all of these issues. You might get a response you're satisfied with, then again you might not (especially if you're expecting him to say something specific). But, at least you will be able to say your peace, and let him know how upset everyone is, and know that your voice was heard.

And that goes for the rest of you too.
