    Default Interview with Steve Landry

ultoday.com interviews VP Steve Landry... good stuff.

BTW, you will also note that we have turned on the Comments function on the article... we had tried that before, and ran into server problems that we finally cleared up.

Some of you who are into pumping up UL, try it out, leave some comments, let me know if you have any problems.

I know both men and either one would've made a good president, IMHO. I do think Savoie's resume is a bit better than Landry's. But that doesn't mean Landry wouldn't have done a fine job. Having said that, I think Savoie is the better choice at this point. Only time will tell.

Would Steve have been better than T-Joe? "Better" is a tough call... they're apples & oranges.

What I'm hearing, however-- even from faculty that were initially skeptical of T-Joe-- is that we may have gotten 2 for the price of 1.

Steve is supposed to be made Provost, about like 1st or Senior VP in a corporation. And the indications now are that T-Joe is going to give him great latitude in running the academic side.

T-Joe, in the meantime, will serve as a true CEO, working on getting the parts all moving in the same direction; and his main focus will be what he did as VP here, i.e., focus on University Advancement, aka external support: government, fundraising, alumni, public relations.

And to that, let me point out something. When T-Joe was lobbying for UL in BR, then-VP Gary Marotta told me one time, "LSU thinks we have an army over there." T-Joe was that effective at lobbying.

Then, we have brought on Ken Ardoin, one of the most effective lobbyists Louisiana has ever seen.

We have also brought on Jerry Luke LeBlanc, who with Edgar Mouton is probably one of the two smartest politicians we have ever sent to the Leg. With that, Jerry Luke is VERY well-known in national circles, as a great innovator in government accountability, and I think he will do some great things for us.

Anyway, with T-Joe, Ken and Jerry Luke, we have a small but very potent political team, who can start working on funding for UL.

"But we can guarantee them that we will produce one of the best academic communities anywhere. We create our own community."

"And that's why UL is going places, that's why we're great. We build community."

Fun, Isn't this what you've been saying all these years?

    Some of us pay attention.

You're right. A lot of people on campus (Steve really isn't one of them) only like what I say, after they forget that I was the one who said it...

    ;-)

    Anyway, thanks for noticing, Beau.

    Is that really necessary?

    Because it's certainly not respectful.

Oh yeah... and don't forget this point.

A friend told me he was talking to one of the LSU Supervisors a couple of years ago, who asked him who he thought the next president of UL would be.

    My friend said, "Probably T-Joe."

The Supervisor replied, "T-Joe turned down the LSU System President job. He is not going to UL-L."

The LSU System wanted him. So did the University of Kentucky. But he wanted to come back here.

In national circles, T-Joe has a very strong reputation and is very well known. And having been Commish, there ain't many tricks in the book he hasn't seen, in Louisiana, or anywhere in the country.
