  4. UL Football Istrouma Wins UL's 7-on-7 passing tournament

Ragin' Cajun grid coaches resurrect popular event for area high schools

Deep in the heart of South Louisiana, where old-fashioned football reigns supreme and the only thing in the air during football games are mosquitos, the UL Ragin' Cajun football coaching staff have somewhat gone against the grain with the resurrection of their 7-on-7 passing tournament.

The tournament, which is just one part of many football-related ventures this week at the UL athletic complex, last appeared at the school in 2001.

But UL coaches Troy Wingerter and Kevin Fouquier brought the popular program back this year as part of four days of football on campus.

"We visited with the high school coaches and we asked them if they were interested in doing a 7-on-7 tournament," said Fouquier, who is entering his second year as defensive coordinator for the Cajuns. "We had about 60 coaches there and they all said they were interested in doing it."

  5. UL Football UL passing tournament: Defenses may benefit most

It's hard for any coach to nail down exactly what his team can carry from a 7-on-7 passing competition to a high school football field in the fall.

It's doubtful that any team got more out of Monday's round-robin 7-on-7 drills at UL, though, than the Cecilia Bulldogs.

After a district championship season a year ago and a frustrating state regional road loss at Redemptorist, the Bulldogs decided to alter their defensive scheme to more of a 3-3 stack to take advantage of an abundance of "safety/linebacker'' type athletes.

"We're just going to try to put more pressure on people,'' Martin said.

UL Football 7 on 7 Passing Tourney at Louisiana.......

was awesome in the words of my son and his friends form Teurlings! I was picking them up from STM today where they weekly particpate in 7 on 7 with Breaux Bridge, STM, TCH and Comeaux and asked how they liked the tourney at UL. They all made very positive comments.

One of the kids said, "Where did they get all the money to pay for the field, did someone give it to them?"

They, the kids and the public NOTICE these things and it is real good, really good!

Just wondering if anyone out there had anything more to say about the tourney and/or the field

Ragin' Cajuns Re: 7 on 7 Passing Tourney at Louisiana.......

Hey Dad, give me another day. I'll be out there tomorrow night for the second annual "Drums Across CAJUN FIELD" drum & bugle corps show. I'm hoping to get there early enough to be able to at least go down to the bottom of the stands to get a good close look at the new field before the show starts.
