I'm surprised this thread hasn't self destructed yet!

Please correct me if I'm wrong about the original deal being done.

I see this extension as a much better deal for Lee than for UL. If we turn it around next year this extension will look great, but if we continue to struggle we are pretty much stuck with him for several more years. I think it would have been better to wait until the end of next season.

From the article this morning. Contract would have expired this summer without a new deal, or an extension.

    Lee to receive 2-year extension

With two months left on his current contract, Robert Lee received the boost of confidence he was hoping for, a reward for helping rebuild the UL men's basketball program both in the classroom and on the court.

    You're right.

Even if it doesn't happen next season, the U still has it's options. One extra year doesn't affect that.

Not several more years, just one.

  8. UL Basketball Robert Lee can recruit

Well it is nice to see Robert Lee can recruit without a long term contract already in hand.

Now 2-years is not forever but it is a lot better than 2-months. Somehow Lee was able to sign Ryan McCoy to a scholarship while his own contract was set to expire in 2 or 3-months. I had heard somewhere before that coaches couldn't recruit under such conditions.

With the entire program being reset and all, I wonder if any other coach could have survived going though what Robert Lee was force to undergo by the administation.

    kudos to Robert Lee. jmo

I am not a big Lee fan by any means and would have prefered that he had been sacked one or even two years ago, but now that he has built the team up in his way and now that the players are more experienced and appear poised for a strong year, it would be a mistake to only have extended him one year (had to extend one year at least if his contract was running out this summer, right?). What message would that send to new potential recruits (as well as current players) if it were only one year extension?

Should be tremedous improvement over the next two seasons or Lee should be gone. I worry that if Lee finishes with mediocre 16-13 type records the next two seasons that he will be retained for another few years, for another rebuilding effort by that time...

But to not extend at least 2 years now would be mistake. Only giving two years sends a message perhaps that he is not on very solid footing, but one year would have been laughable.

I think the extension was given because his contract had ended.. That was a surprise to me as I thought he had another year. He would have been in effect fired without it. This extension was as much as for cleaning up academics as anything else.
