Thread: Biology/ chem dept issues

    Default Biology/ chem dept issues

My oldest son has been trying to finish his BS in biology for the last 2 semesters but has had much trouble getting needed labs in a few courses. The issue seems to be they may offer lecture seats for 200, but the associated labs seats are 30 to 50. Therefore he has been unable to get the lab with the associated course. This has been going on for the last 3 years since he transferred from lswho. So we look at this as his completion of his degree has cost me money and have kept him in school due to this university's lack of resources and money, or just ____ poor strategic planning.

They are still getting my money. Now he needs one more course this semester to graduate in May, but cannot get into a need chemistry due to lack of seats. Before the break he got on a wait list, along with 12 other seniors who need the course to graduate!!! How in the hell can this university do this? How about giving these students priority (he supposedly has) and kick the others out who don't need the course to graduate in May. He has gotten into the scheduling system on day one, but the class was already filled. How can this be? To add to his issue he received an email from a dean today saying that he will be one course short for graduation in May. So even the deans in this university are clueless as to this dire situation, no help from the dean, just an email saying "sorry but come back next fall.." Yes he has sought help from his advisor and dept heads at the end of last semester.

Wonder how this university is generating money for the academic side... seems to me like they have limited class seats, don't honor senior needs, and make them come back another 1 or 2 or even 3 semesters.

I have since found out that some bio/chem students take classes at LSU Eunice while enrolled at UL in order to get needed degree classes. My son has even found out that some students in the past have threatened legal action against UL.

My younger son is not having this problem in Pet Eng. Again I am in a position and planned a nice donation to the Bio & Eng dept upon their graduations. Guess which dept will get $0.

Any comments or suggestions would help.

Well my arse would be sitting in the waiting room outside T-Joes office. Then I would go to my state rep. and ask who is running against them and needs a donation. This is what funding cuts do. Those courses could be taught by grad students if there was money to recruit and pay them. That _____ govenor does not have all of the power.

It does seem like pending graduation needs should get priority seating.

How about if they get together with RCAF and come up with a points system for earned seats. "Last class needed to graduate" should be worth a lot of points.

I graduated in Biology in 2002, never had a problem getting my classes in. Enrollment is about the same as back then. I never heard of such a thing.

What you're really saying is they have lots of unfillable empty seats.

I graduated in 1999 in Chem/Bio (took a boat-load of labs) and I never had issues, but that was many years ago. If I needed it to graduate, I would be sitting on the Chemistry Head’s desk every day until he gets sick of me. Sounds like someone may not be trying hard enough???

The fact that I can't down-rep your profile into oblivion is starting to tick me off
