Thread: 2014 Branding Fiasco: UL-Lafayette or UL-L (SBC Reference Guide)

    Default Re: Why not ULA

This Board discussed the "ULA" name over and over about 7-8 years ago. I recall posting how this would be analogous to U GA and U VA. The argument then was that UGA stood for UG Athens (which if you ask a Georgia grad, that is not how they view it), and that maybe U VA stood for U Virginia (VA).
Folks kept getting wrapped around the axle on what the "A" would stand for. Lots of others (me included) went with the VA version but others were uncomfortable - thinking we would need to change the name to UL "Acadiana".

Bottom line: Based on the DEAFENING SILENCE from Martin Hall (Doc Savoie) on this Sun Belt "clarification," we should start with ULA, Push for a change to UL Acadiana, and continue the fight for "Louisiana".

    Just this guys. 3 cents.....

Here is what I just don't understand.

Why didn't they just put some random letters like LNA or LRC?

It seems to me you do anything. Just don't ever put ULL or UL-L or U-LL, etc.

This was perhaps the dumbest thing I have ever seen come out of Martin Hall.

The name change was, is, and always be an unmitigated disaster. It was never based in reality. It never had a chance to succeed. It was only done to please the Academic side. To this day, they see absolutely nothing wrong with the state of affairs.

I'm so freakin tired of defending this administration and explaining to people just who we are. When ignorant fans of other schools ridicule our name, is it even worth it anymore to answer them?

Congratulations T-Joe. You now have a defeated fanbase.

Maybe Dr. Savioe is getting pressure from the board and is on the recieving end of the down hill ____e??

None the less...UL-* is not acceptable and he should have come up with something better. Sucess breeds enemies....and in Louisiana politics everything is worse. Its sad to say that it probably wont get any better.

DR. Savioe need to fix this and fast...send another revision!!!!
You need to send your comments to Aaron Martin.

Because "Acadia" is in Nova Scotia, Canadia (I think Nova Scotia used to be called "Acadia"); and "Acadiana" is the South, Central parishes in Louisiana.

Well Acadia refers to the culture in each of these regions. People living in Acadia are called Acadians or Cajuns after the resettlement in south louisiana.

I could see why trying to use Acadiana might be the best first option but If we have to create a special tax district I say we go for Acadia all the way

    This still isn't right.
We're "Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns" -- as if "Louisiana" is an adjective; like "African Elephant"

While everyone else is just "Vandals" or "Warhawks"

First reference should be "Louisiana." Whatever. All we essentially did was remove a hyphen and shove a "Louisiana" in front of our mascot name. Too tired to care.

#2 - Related to #1 above, the article in the paper today quote Benson as saying that while we never signed off an anything, we didn't object either. He suggests that maybe an oversite someone from the university did not catch. Let's say that is true...how freaking incompetent is our leadership and the people entrusted. This whole battle about our name and what not to call us, and when the rough draft of the press release was sent out, no one from the school said a single thing?

#3 - We keep talking about what Joseph Savoie should do or should have done. That same article in the paper this morning, read the last sentence. Savoie has consistently declined any comment or to answer any questions. What kind of arrogant crap is that? Jay mentioned this on his show yesterday. The university, especially the leadership, for the past several months has refused to answer any questions whatsoever on this issue.

If I'm wrong, tell me I'm wrong, but this is what I truly believe right now.
No disagreement but a comment on point #2, Benson is well aware of the name issue and what a hot button issue it is. So for him to try to pass it off as "Oh well, I didn't hear any objection" is disingenuous at best and in truth just outright bull____. The University stated what their preference was and he rejected it.

Thirty years later, it seems the bus driver comes from within our family, and that is what is so horrid about this. This is the main issue.

Secondly, we, as a group, I agree, did not stay to the message and got off base. Tabby, for example, is only 2014's version of 1984's Jim Beam, writer for the American Press. She might be a lot of things which we may or may not know, but dropping to the level someone on this site did to call her a name with the adjective "cancerous", given her health history crossed the line. We are collectively better than that. If you wanted to call her the cut and paste queen, that would have been more appropriate.

Going toward, continue to say it, wear it, University of Louisiana...no debates, no in your face, just remain true to the message.
I'm the "someone" who called her a cancerous skank and I have no regrets. And yes I am aware of her "health history". Big ____ing deal. That isn't a shield that protects her. She wanted a fight, she's got it. And there are no "lines" in a street fight. She wanted to crawl in the gutter, she better expect to get some ____ on her. So ____ that cancerous skank.
