Ragin Cajun Roller Hockey at Nationals

If you didnt know, UL has had a roller hockey club for about 10 years now. We have made our third trip to nationals in the last 5 years. In previous years we made it as the runner ups in our region, the Southwest Collegiate Hockey League.

This year the Cajuns went 19-1 on the regular season and rapped it up with their first league championship, breaking UT Dallas 5 year streak at the top. The Cajuns had blown away almost all opponents in league play, even winning one game 29-1. In the finals of the playoffs we defeated our main rivals Sam Houston State 2 games to 1 winning the cup and earning a nationals appearance.

In previous national appearances in Anaheim, CA and Fort Collins, CO we haven't seen much success. This year has been different though at the NCRHA Nationals in Colorado Springs, CO. After a tough loss against Cal State Pomona in a game that was 3-2 deficit midway through, penalties got us and we went down 8-3. We bounced back in a big way dominating play against Southern Illinois winning 11-7. And defeating a perennial powerhouse in Shippensberg University 9-4. Each game we have improved so far.

We finished 2nd in our group and seeded as a #4 seed against #5 seed Maine. The game will take place Saturday morning at 11 AM Central and will be radio broadcast online. I am gonna assume topshelf in youngsville. Thats where I played when i played for Lafayette High and we used to scrimage against them and get whooped quite badly.

Yea we play at Topshelf in Youngsville. We get about 6 home games in a 20 game season just because you have to play at least 3 games in a weekend usually, so most teams dont have true home games. Rest of games are in Dallas and Houston areas.

Cajuns lost 12 - 6 vs Maine. Looks like they are out of the tournament.

Yea we took a tough loss to Maine. They played a real tight pressure defense and took us out of our game a little. Not to blame it on the calls, but I believe their first 6 goals (it was still close at that point) were on the power play. Some of the calls were bad, and some were a result of Maine's style.

All in all not a bad season. UL's first SCHL championship and first 2 wins at a national event. That would put us around top 15 in the country. Not bad for a bunch of IceGator squirts that have been playing together all our lives.

I have seen many of you grow up through high school hockey. I refereed at Topshelf for a while. This is a very good Roller Hockey team. You guys proved it by winning many games by 15plus goals. Who would have thought that UL would have had a team play in the SCHL championship.
