UL - The Louisiana softball team hosts their first home Sun Belt Conference series of the season this weekend as they welcome South Alabama to Lamson Park.
The home conference games will mark the first Sun Belt series at UL in nearly a year. The Lady Cajuns last hosted a SBC series on Apr. 21-22, 2007 when UL won two games of a three-game series with Troy.
The Lady Cajuns and Lady Jaguars met up in Mobile, Ala. last season with the two teams splitting the series. One game of the series was canceled because of inclement weather in the Mobile area. The Cajuns won the first meeting between the two schools 5-4 in 11 innings with Brittany Cuevas (Brazoria, Texas) earning the win. Louisiana dropped game two of the series 8-0 in five innings.
UL enters the weekend with a pair of impressive streaks.
The Cajuns are in the midst of a seven-game winning streak, dating back to Apr. 1 when the Ragin’ Cajuns swept a doubleheader with Grambling. The streak is two games short of their longest winning streak of 2008. The Cajuns won nine consecutive games to start the season before dropping a 3-1 decision at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. to Nebraska.
Louisiana is also 11-0 at Lamson Park this season and has won 14 consecutive games at home dating back to the 2007 Troy series. The Cajuns have outscored their opponents 126-to-6 during the 14 games with 11 shutouts. UL has currently recorded 38 consecutive shutout innings at home this season dating back to the third inning of the first game with Nicholls State on Mar. 4.
The Ragin’ Cajuns have always been comfortable at Lamson Park and 2008 is no different.
This season, the Cajuns are perfect at home and have outscored their opponents 101-to-6. The Cajuns boast a .382 batting average compared to a .107 average by their opponents. Louisiana has collected 37 extra base hits this season at home with 10 home runs, five triples and 22 doubles in 11 games compared to just two extra base hits by the visitors.
The Lady Cajuns’ pitching staff has also thrived at home this season. Louisiana has boasted a 0.62 earned run average at home compared to a 9.98 ERA by their opponents. In the 11 home games this season, the pitching staff has thrown eight shutouts. The “Killer B’s” of Cuevas, Ashley Brignac (River Ridge, La.) and Donna Bourgeois (Lafayette, La.) have combined for 102 strikeouts with only 29 total walks.
