  1. UL Golf Ragin' Cajuns Finish fifth at Indian Classic


    JONESBORO, Ark. - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team posted four scores of even par or lower for a team score of 14 under par, but finished the first day of the Indian Classic in a tie for seventh place.

    The Cajuns finished the first day of the tournament 10 strokes back of New Orleans who finished the day at 24 under par. Two strokes back of UNO was Austin Peay (-22) who finished the first two rounds one stroke ahead of Illinois State (-21) and three strokes in front of Southern Florida (-19).

    Tournament-host Arkansas state finished just ahead of the Cajuns in fifth place with a 18-under par day.

    Fellow Sun Belt Conference member ULM finished the day three strokes ahead of UL in sixth place. Only two teams finished the day over par.

    Four Ragin’ Cajuns golfers finished the day at even par or lower.

    Michael Smith (Lafayette, La.) paced Louisiana in a tie for sixth place. The senior posted back-to-back rounds in the 60s to finish the day at seven under par. He opened the day with a three-under par 69 before improving one stroke in the second round, carding a 68.

    Devin Carrey (South Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) turned in a pair of sub-par rounds of his own to finish the day in a tie for 10t)h. Carrey carded a two-under par round of 70 before matching Smith for the Cajuns’ low round of the day at 68.

    Morgan Landry (Lafayette, La.) and Kyle Pritchard (San Antonio, Texas) combined for a one-under par day of competition. Landry was one under par in the first round before playing even in the second half of the day. Pritchard was solid in both rounds turning in back-to-back rounds of even par.

    Rounding out the scoring for the Cajuns was Thomas Petts (North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada). Petts finished the day at seven over par carding rounds of 76 and 75, respectively.

    JONESBORO, Ark. - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s golf team put together another stellar round at the ASU Indian Classic to finish the tournament in fifth place. Senior Michael Smith (Lafayette, La.) carded his third consecutive round under par to finish the tournament in a tie for fifth.

    The Ragin’ Cajuns received four sub-par performances to drop to 20 under par for the tournament and move into fifth place. The Cajuns entered the day in a tie for seventh place. UL dropped six strokes in the final round counting two rounds of 70 and two rounds of 71 on the final day of competition.

    The Cajuns finished 10 strokes back of tournament winner Austin Peay (-30). Tournament-host Arkansas State finished their tournament in second place finishing at 28-under par, one stroke ahead of third place Illinois State and three strokes in front of New Orleans.

    Smith finished the tournament in fifth place with his nine-under par performance. The senior finished four strokes back of tournament winner Tyler Thompson of Arkansas State.

    Smith was one of two Ragin’ Cajuns to turn in a scorecard of 70 in the final round of competition. Kyle Pritchard (San Antonio, Texas) also finished the day at two-under par to move into a tie for 36th overall.

    Devin Carrey (South Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) finished the tournament in 10th place overall. Carrey and fellow Canadian Thomas Petts (North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) each had rounds of one-under par 71.

    Rounding out the scoring for the Cajuns was Morgan Landry (Lafayette, La.). The senior carded a three-over par round of 75 to close out the tournament at two-over par.

    The Ragin’ Cajuns will look to defend their Sun Belt Conference title as they head to the 2008 Conference Championship in Muscle Shoals, Ala. on Monday, Apr. 21. The Cajuns will play through Wednesday, Apr. 23 as they look win their second consecutive championship.
