UL's Josh Logan made sure teammate Gabe Begneaud ended his Cajun career on a high note.

Logan's suicide squeeze bunt with the bases loaded in the ninth inning drove in the winning run Tuesday as UL edged Lamar, 3-2, at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

The thriller between former Sun Belt and American South Conference rivals capped the Cajun career for Begneaud, a redshirt freshman from Lafayette who suffered a serious knee injury during a jet-ski accident in the summer of 2005.

After enduring the physical and mental pain of 10 surgeries, he recently decided to give up baseball and focus on his school work.

Before the game, team captains approached UL coach Tony Robichaux and asked him to put Begneaud in the lineup one last time. The result was one of the most exciting finishes of the year for the Cajuns, who improved to 4-7 at home this year.

"Tonight was pretty much the best 0-for-4 night I've ever had," Begneaud said with tears in his eyes. "It was definitely a special night.

"It feels good, it feels real good."
