Thread: The history of New Orleans bowl games

  1. Default The history of New Orleans bowl games

There will be 35 NCAA-sanctioned bowl games played in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) — the highest level in collegiate pigskin — during the 2013-14 season.

The list of events ranges from Bowl Championship Series events — including New Orleans' Sugar Bowl and the national championship game — to smaller contests like the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, Belk Bowl and Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

More than half of the FBS teams in the country will play in bowl games, which have existed for more than a century, and although the number of bowl games is seen by some to diminish their relevance, they provide us with some good stories.

Here are some games featuring New Orleans and Louisiana teams.

Read it. He essentially totally discounts so called 'minor' bowls, most particularly, he directly denigrates the New Orleans Bowl.

He obviously has not attended a New Orleans Bowl especially in the past three years.

IMHO, i see an article that is focused on Tulane. In every instance of history it tells us what Tulane did, in almost every paragraph it’s focused on Tulane. I honestly don't see him diminishing the relevance of the nola bowl, moreover he is just telling the history of Tulane...albeit skewed i don't see him purposely downplaying the significance of the nola bowl.

In his introductory paragraph he tells us he will be talking about the history of the bowls. He ends the article with quotes from benson insinuating that minor bowls are of major impact.
Yes he does pose the question of whether or not we need the nola bowl, but instead of answering it himself he relies on benson and other nola bowl officials. He never, that I can find, suggests himself we don’t need it. He merely poses the question.

But being a journalist and posing the question shouldn't he have answered it? Otherwise any one of us could write mindless articles posing questions without answering them and call ourselves a journalist. And he lives in Gretna so he should gave gad easy access to info on the Bowl if not the Bowl itself.

Maybe he should gave written two different articles, one on the history of "minor" Bowls in NOLA and another specifically on the NO Bowl.

Agree 06 to a great extent the headline of this article does not in any way have much to do with the body of work. This was a TooLame piece, and we all know the headlines are rarely written by the article author.

One thing of interest to me is the bowl in Havana. Now I do know that the ROSE BOWL the grandaddy of them all is celebrating it's centennial this year. Clearly there seems to be earlier bowls from this article.

Lastly the Gambit is to New Orleans what the Independent is to Lafayette, an upper crust artsy fartsy mostly liberal publication for the pseudo intellectuals of the area.

45000 plus Cajun fans * 500 min spent in New Orleans = over 22 million dollar impact to economy. Ok it's a Minimal bowl. Don't tell that to the local business people.

I disagree with the idea if more bowl games. What you need is to cut the double tie-ins. 1 - Conference Tie-in; 1 - At-large.....for the BCS games, top 10 in the Rankings. If more than 2 AQ teams get in and none from another AQ, tough $**t.....I'm fed up with 8-4 teams getting left at home in favor of 6-6. Or sending TX/FL schools to NY for a bowl game. The committees need more regional selection at be satisfied with what they get....increased ticket sales.
