Default Football 2008 Prospectus/Depth Charts Out

The 2008 Spring Prospectus and depth charts are out for the football team. Check the "notes" section on the athletic website for the school.

Homecoming is being billed as the 63rd in school history. WRONG! The true number is much higher.

But forget that for a second, or two, there is a much bigger event the same day.

The Novembr 1st game vs Florida International will be the 1000th football game in UL history.

If I can be so bold and note; 12 of the 992 games already played were recovered and dutifully recorded again (for the first time) through the efforts of this website.

I sure hope some of our key players add weight in the off season. I know these are the same weights they had last Sept. at the start of the season, so nothing was changed in the spring. But, some of the players on our depth chart have high school size:

    DT - 265 lbs. & 253 lbs.
    DE - 214 lbs. & 223 lbs.
    LB - 210 lbs., 205 lbs., 195 lbs., 198 lbs.
    TE - 225 lbs.
    C - 256 lbs.
    G - 266 lbs.

How do you win in 1A football with players of this size? Fortunately, most of these guys have good height and can handle added weight. I know speed is important, but this borders on the rediculous. I will be very interested to see how these players report in the fall and what our depth chart looks like at that time, when it really matters.

Size doesn't win r lose games...if you have a smaller front 7 on defense your scheme is what matters not the size of them. We have a run based offense that calls for smaller quicker offensive linemen...look at the Denver Broncos they ran a zone running scheme and never averaged over 300. Its all about scheme and putting guys in the right place to make plays.

K I had to find an example on defense for what I was talking about...Do you think Boise State is a pretty good team :-)

This is Boise States front 7 from last year...

    DE - Nick Schlekeway 6'4 262
    DT - Sione Tavake 6'1 270
    DT - Ian Smart 6'3 278
    DE - Mike T. Williams 6'4 245
    LB - Tim Brady 6'1 207
    LB - Kyle Gingg 5'11 220
    LB - Dallas Dobbs 6'2 219

This was our front 7 from last year...

    DE - Rodney Hardaway 6'3 230
    DT - Korey Raymond 6'4 290
    DT - LaQuincy Williams 6'3 283
    DE - Terrell Richardson 6'5 235 0r Hall Davis 6'4 214
    LB - Grant Flemming 6'3 210
    LB - Brenton Burkhalter 6'0 223
    LB - Antwyne Zanders 6'0 212

That is not much of a defference between those front 7's...we are bigger in places and they are bigger in certain places. It's all about scheme and something called heart!

Not to worry. I know the TEs personnally. Both 88 and 86 are both closer to the 240 - 245 ranges than where listed. Look at Erik's listed weight last year. Matt U lost weight as freshmen and has put it back on last season(weight not revised on depth chart). I know there are several guys on that list with similar stories.

Yeah, I take those roster listings with a grain of salt. It's kinda like basketball rosters where they list 5'11" guys as 6'2", and 6'6" guys as 6'8". They aren't always known for their accuracy. And, as you pointed out, they aren't always updated frequently either.

    86
matt had a nice spring.. first caught my eye as he dove for a pass in the endzone during one scrimmage..

it may be hard for me to describe but will try....

many guys dive for balls all the time, though in this instance when matt leap (leapt ?) with a one hand stab.. his body motion, his reach for the pass, showed me he had a clue to being a receiver.. not just someone jumping at a ball

ps. told you i couldn't describe it well (grins)

pss. i hopefully anticipate big things from the TE position this fall !
