Thread: Ragin' Cajun, Hunter Moody Earns Third Sun Belt Honor

  1. UL Baseball Ragin' Cajun, Hunter Moody Earns Third Sun Belt Honor

NEW ORLEANS - Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns senior pitcher Hunter Moody (Clinton, La.) earned his third Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week award Monday as the league office honored the left-hander as its top pitcher.

Moody's third league honor is a single-season school record. Earlier this season, Moody became the first pitcher in school history to be named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week in successive weeks (Feb. 26 and Mar. 3). Monday's recognition is the fifth of his career, tying him with Kevin Ardoin for the most in school history.

Moody (4-1) continues his stellar senior campaign after notching his fourth victory of the season with an eight-inning masterpiece in the Cajuns' 12-1 thumping of UALR Friday night. The senior allowed one run on six hits, while fanning nine batters on a career-high 133 pitches. His win moved him into a tie for first place on the school's career wins list with 26, joining Andy Gros and Scott Dohmann. Moody's next victory will give him the school mark all to himself.

During Friday night's contest, Moody closed in on two more career categories - strikeouts and innings pitched. Moody's 241 career punch-outs trail only Scott Dohmann (245) for fifth on the all-time list. The senior has also logged 289 1/3 innings pitched and needs 1 1/3 innings to surpass Garrett O'Connor for fifth all-time.

I was about to ask how it was that Josh Logan didn't win the Offensive Player of the Week award, after the special week he had last week. That was until I read this...

NEW ORLEANS – Pitchers might want to think twice about throwing to Mike McKenna of Florida Atlantic University the rest of the season. To say the senior right fielder is on fire might be an understatement.

McKenna was awarded Sun Belt player of the week honors for the second time this season in part because of his Herculean effort from the plate. McKenna went 12-for-22 (.545 BA) with seven home runs and 19 RBI in six games this past week. McKenna, the Sun Belt’s top returning hitter (.413 BA in 2007), led the Owls to a perfect 6-0 record last week. He homered three times in FAU’s opening game against conference opponent Middle Tennessee, going 4-for-5 with seven RBI.

McKenna began the week by belting two homers and driving in five against Cornell in a lopsided 10-1 FAU victory.

McKenna is hitting .434 this season and is leading the Sun Belt Conference in homers (13), RBI (43) and total bases (82). McKenna was phenomenal during FAU’s recent homestand, homering nine times in 10 games driving in 26 runs and totaling 46 bases.
