Thread: Hudspeth explains postgame rant

Call it what you want, but I have been reading this stuff. Regardless it makes no sense to say that the coach cannot defend his team if he disagrees with what is being said.

Bottom line; you have the right to say it, and he has the right to respond. I am not happy with the way the team has performed over the last couple of games, but some of this stuff was clearly over the top. (yes I was reading the game thread) If you want freedom of speach, that knife can cut both ways.

There were never any insults shot directly at the players or the team. Did some people think we played "flat" uninspired football over the last few games? Yes, some did. It appears Hud did too. "We need to play with more fire". But that is not "bashing" the team.

There are times bashing occurs on this forum. And there is good reason to... and good ways to... try and squelch it. But to arbitrarily "bash the bashers" on a thread that had no reason to go that direction... is a misapplication of emotion. And it is counterproductive to eliminating "bashing".

On one side you will have the green wave, and on the other the RED SEA!

And it's the over the top bashing that I am referring to. And From the comments on other threads and private messages that I have received, from some long time posters, I know I am not am not even close to being the only one that think this.

If you fit into the category of over the top, overtly critical, unprofessional type criticism or bashing then my post was aimed at you...if not then disregard.

It's amazing how some people say that fans should not be chided for emotional comments and then chide HUD for doing the same.

This thread is now over the top. You could keep picking at this sore to infinity and it's just going to be like a dog chasing his tail around endlessly. The point is there were hundreds of fans who traveled hundreds of miles with the team to the ghettos of Mobile, Alabama. They don't have the priviledge of getting off a bus fifty feet from the entrance to the stadium. They have to park a mile away in some instances and walk through some of the most poverty stricken neighborhoods in the South, both ways - in the dark. And they made a hell of an effort in following the team there In the $h!++!@st of weather.

The only commentary which was appropriate at that particular time concerning the fans was I'm sorry we played like crap in front of our fans who have shown great support to our program over the past three seasons. I take full responsibility when we perform this way, and I promise to do everything in my power to assure it won't happen again. Rant out = Everyone happy.

Anything else has everyone head scratching, and those who defend such rants without sound reasoning continue to show they are koolaid drinking idiots who deserve any crap shoveled to them by the powers that be.

So you don't think there's a difference in one of our students saying, "my professor sucks" on Facebook... as opposed to Dr. Savoie saying, "my students suck"... on live TV? There is a difference. A coach should not chastise fans for being critical. It is not the same as fans being critical of a coach. It isn't the same. It has nothing to do with "freedom of speech". It has to do with the position the person holds, the venue, and the appropriateness of the comment.

If we're talking about "game time threads"... are you saying that if someone writes "Brauchle can't be counted on to make this field goal"... or "Terrance is overthrowing his receivers"... that's "bashing" the player in your opinion? That's the worst I usually read.

Now you will read me writing, "this stupid defensive scheme sucks". Is that bashing someone? Or is that my disliking a scheme? Is that "over the top"? I just don't see it that way.

And to be quite honest... I'm probably a lot more sick of the posts against this magnificient fan base, down to the individual that at least buys a ticket, than I am about how rough our coaches or administration have it at UL. I'm major league disgusted by the attempts to "set the fan base straight"... in fact. You see... Jay Walker wouldn't want to interview me on KPEL. I'd make it abundantly clear what the Ragin Cajun fan has put up with as compared to what the coaches and administration have. And only "one side of that knife would cut". And it would cut to the bone. You'll have to trust me on this... I would guarantee that no coach or administrator or radio host EVER made another derogatory comment toward the Cajun nation... or the Cajun fan.

You could call me a "defender of the Ragin Cajun fan". And I'm "armed to the teeth" I guarantee you. If given more than this keyboard... I assure you I could rip anyone you put in front of me to shreds about "being critical of the Cajun fan". The last human on this planet that I think needs a scolding is a "Ragin Cajun fan". And that includes the foul-mouthed air breather that rants on here on game day threads. He's paid his dues.

I've said my last on this. Enjoy the festivities this week, Bigbuf. I plan to.

    Well...there you have it folks.

I certainly will enjoy myself this week...heading up on Thursday, making the bowl luncheon, do some Christmas shopping, maybe play a little golf at TPC, maybe some gambling at Harrah's...oh and watch UL whip some _____!

Lets face it when you bash the team you are really bashing the coach, and he does not like that. Granted bashing the vegetable field goal kicker is bashing an individual but he got lifted by a coach. We do not have the power to lift a player or players, so we bash, hud sits um.

If you want to be an atta boy fan no matter what, and I am fine with that. If you think it is disloyal to challenge a coach and or players that is your view. I for one would never boo my team, but clearly cannot cheer a poor effort like USA and ULM. If I cannot cheer the poor effort then must I also absolve myself from critiquing those poor efforts?

Frankly it does not bother me what hud says about the fans, unless he falsely says they are not supporting like Marlin did a couple of seasons ago when they were in a multiple game losing streak. So if Hud wants to bite the hand that feeds him I am good with that, but I think it is an error on a coaches watch to bash the fans for vague non supporting comments.
