Lady Cajuns Holly Tankersley (Kirbyville, Texas) and Ashley Brignac (River Ridge, La.) were selected the first Louisiana Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week for 2008 as announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association on Thursday.
Tankersley hit .417 last week, going 5-for-12 at the plate. Hitting three home runs, a double and her first collegiate triple, the senior recorded a 1.417 slugging percentage. Adding in three walks and Tankersley recorded a .533 on base percentage. Driving in a team-high seven runs, she had her first multi-homer game of the season, while also scoring five runs.
Brignac went 3-0 on the week with a 0.91 earned run average and 28 strikeouts. Beginning the week with a complete game shutout of McNeese State, she allowed only two hits against the Cowgirls and did not allow a batter to reach third base.
Against Southern Miss on Saturday, she threw a complete-game three-hitter while striking out eight. The freshman picked up her third win of the week in an 11-inning game against the Golden Eagles. She became the first pitcher since 2002 to threw 11 or more innings in a game and struck out 12 in the win.
This is the first career Louisiana Pitcher of the Week honor for Brignac and the first of the season for Tankersley. These are the first Louisiana Hitter/Pitcher of the Week awards this year. From this point on, the LSWA will announce the weekly honors on Tuesday afternoons each week until the completion of the 2008 season.
